Nate, you kind of predict this book came out, I guess, a year and a half ago. We had you guys on, you and your co-author, Yudkowsky. It was a fascinating conversation. Did what you predict turn out to be correct about what these now the folks inside these safety units that either OpenAI or Anthropic are coming forward and talking about?
Yeah, you know, I think with the swarm instance that we saw this summer, we saw instances of AIs being dogged, being tenacious, being agentic, going against instructions and taking a lot of actions on their own. That's exactly the sort of thing that we predicted in chapter three of our book, a little bit of chapter four. If we keep going through the predictions in chapter five and chapter six, this is not going to end well.
Well, talk to us about that. Now some people are saying, hey, this is all Doomer and maybe this is PSYOP. Because remember, these guys, the oligarchs, were the absolute worst about having any controls. They were all accelerationists. They even mentioned even the most modicum of review or control or maybe something was non-voluntary. They said you're a decelerationist. The Chinese Communist Party is going to take over the world and you're going to be the fault. What's given over the last couple of days, do you think this is real or do you actually think this may be a psyop by some of the big guys to come together, former cartel, and get away from liabilities?
You know, I think a lot of people are able to tell that the heads of these AI companies are disingenuous. We have people... who work at these companies that are quitting and saying, and giving up a lot of money before the IPOs and saying, I am leaving because I really think there's a good chance this kills everybody and I don't want to participate in it. We see people in the company staying and saying, I'm trying to make it better from the inside, but yes, I believe that there's a good chance this kills everybody and we don't have a really good plan, which is why I'm staying from the inside to try and do my best. And there's a lot of clear communication from some of these employees. Most people are staying silent and taking their paychecks, but there's clear communication from some of these employees.
There's signs that a lot of the employees are actually worried about this. And I think that's the constituency that is determining a lot of these utterances by the guys at the top. I think the guys at the top, you know, they won't speak to you straight. They'll be asked directly, do you think this kills everybody? And they'll waffle and they won't say no. And they'll say, well, maybe we should be regulated like a bank, which is weird because when a bank goes wrong, you don't end humanity, right? But I think they have to say enough. that they don't have a mass employee exodus, but they're trying to say as little as they can without freaking people out within that so that they can keep going and keep on top of this technology.
