What has this been like for you so far? You've been through a ton of these. What's this been like?
The hardest part is always when you're in a new hotel is figuring out where everything is, right? Because you're trying to navigate the lobby and otherwise. But I love winter meetings for this reason. You get to see a lot of people around the industry that you don't get to see very often. It's about the people and the connections. And then, yeah, you got plenty of work to do too, but it's laying groundwork for a lot of things that come later in the winter too. There's a lazy river right outside the window. I probably won't spend any time in that. No one wants to see me in that. Maybe Terry Francona will be swimming laps in one of these pools, and that I would love to see.
Oh, content, my friend, content. All right, so I know you've been asked this a bunch of times about what you're going to do with Joe Ryan, Pablo Lopez. What's your inclination with that?
Yeah, our view now, and especially as we've worked through this ownership process and getting to kind of the completion and understanding exactly what our goals are for 2026, I'm going to find a way to add around our group. Our goal and our focus is to figure out ways to fill some holes that we have on our team. But we feel good about the core. Those guys you just mentioned, we expect to get a lot of calls on, and we always have. But ultimately, we're going to try and figure out a way to put pieces around those players and focus our efforts on that.
Have you, in the last few days, it's like basically, and I get that sense even at GM meetings, I don't know when you sort of took that stance. Is that fair that around there?
I think it's fair to say that at the deadline, obviously, we had a lot of conversations about some trades of players away. That's well documented. But we knew when we brought players back in those trades, some of those were big league players, right? We brought Alan Roden right up to the big leagues. Taj Bradley had already pitched in the big leagues. Mick Abel was part of our rotation. So when we made those trades, it wasn't just about trading for younger talent. We got some really good young talent back that we think improves our system. But we were trying to figure out how could we maybe reset our roster, reset our payroll space, and then ultimately build going into 2026. Now we were still in the process of a team sale process with some uncertainty going forward.
So we didn't know exactly what the 26 offseason might look like, 25 into 26. Now we have a better sense of that. And the focus now from ownership on down is to figure out ways that we can add to this club.
Have you been able to talk to Joe, Pablo, about sort of that? Yeah, we talk to them even going back to the deadline.
Those guys I have such open communication with on a regular basis, just around all the decisions that have been made, the rumors that are out there that we can't control, and they know that. You talk to their agents. It's all about the relationship you have with those players, and I know they love it in Minnesota. I know they love being a part of this team and know that we have some talent within the group, and ultimately we'll try and add to it so that those guys can be the leaders we know they can be to give us a good club.
