and how you go about that? Every year is unique and potentially a reaction and a response to the last market, whether that was the trade deadline, whether that was free agency the year before. So I think it's still premature to think that anyone's got a read on the market right now and start to have these conversations and try to gather information. But just in having some... initial conversations with other clubs, with agents, you get a sense for how the rest of the industry views some of your players, and maybe what the markets might dictate for some of the more prominent free agents.
The timing of it, obviously Bregman was a great example last year. Some people go, hey, come on, come on, for months, come on, go get them, and then ultimately you land where you want to land. How difficult was that? How difficult is that?
It's hard because every person in my seat is super competitive and emotional and wants to put the best team together that they possibly can. And you have to buffer that with being responsible and disciplined. Sometimes waiting is the right move. Not always. So, you know, you have to do your best to take the most kind of responsible, disciplined position that you can and know that it's going to work some of the time.
It's also not going to work. And Wilson was the other way, right? I mean, did you feel like, okay, let's make a move quick on this? Because why? Because of the market? Because of the position? Yeah.
Because of what we thought he could be, and what we thought he could be relative to the alternatives, and there was an opportunity to get him on board early by being pretty aggressive, so it made sense to do so. And that takes both sides. There are plenty of, I'm sure, plenty of pitchers in that situation who would have wanted to let the market play out, but Justin was interested in coming to the Red Sox, liked the direction that we were headed, and obviously made the commitment to do so.
How does timing influence trades and signings in baseball?
Even if you wanted to, for some of these big ticket items, if you wanted to be aggressive, say, hey, listen, we want to do this right now, What's your sense? Is it that they're just going to wait? I mean, they're going to play this out? I mean, it's almost impossible to do something like that now, I would imagine.
It's difficult, but I think every situation is unique, so I wouldn't want to project a response on someone else. I think you try to be as aggressive as you can when you identify the right fit, but to your point, that doesn't mean that it'll be reciprocated.
How are you looking at that now? Are you expecting to get calls? No.
We'll be open-minded about the opportunities to use areas of depth to address other needs on our roster, but I'll probably stop short of saying that we have an extra outfielder just because You know, with three outfielders and potentially the DH position, you know, we need to balance that out as well.
But I think there are enough at-bats to be able to work that out. And we saw that last year. So, you know, I don't think we're in a situation where we have to move somebody. But if it made sense, we have to be open-minded about it. Can you be aggressive? I mean, obviously, we've done this a little bit. We've saved quite a bit of money. I feel like we've got room to make some moves. Yeah.
You know, I'm not going to get into specifics of payroll per se, but I'll say that we feel like we have the support, we have the resources to ensure that we can do the things that allow us to build a team that can improve on what we did in 2025.
