I know that people have said this to you before. congratulations a lot of great stuff in terms of getting this contract extension just if you can just sort of take me through the process because I remember standing here we talked about you were almost like thinking about retirement like if you weren't right it remember that and now like take me through how this happened you know the part for the progression of it and you're just your mindset throughout the process
yeah it was obviously nothing's easy or simple but it seemed like it was a relatively easy we were kind of sitting over here holding court um like we usually do just like you know the guys in this area and we were talking about um we're talking about the lockout next year and like how that works like if someone is under contract for 27 does it go to 28 or does it end in 27 is it a free agent alex walks in as we're kind of having that conversation so you know and he he comes in here and you know has conversations all the time with us so we're like hey you know come over here real quick like we have a question for you So we asked, like, hey, if you're contracted through 27, does it roll over to 28, or are you a free agent after 27?
And we start getting to that, and he ends up using me as an example because this was my last year. So he's like, let's say we give, you know, Saylor a one-year contract extension. He wouldn't get paid, he wouldn't get service time, but he would then be a free agent after the 27th season. And I just made a joke. I said, you know, I don't turn down contracts. So, you know, what are you waiting? It was just kind of like just messing around. So I go take a shower, come back, and he comes over to me and he's like, hey, like, Were you serious? I was like, yeah. And like earlier that day, or maybe it was the day before, you know, he said he wanted to have me wear a Braves uniform for as long as I'm playing baseball.
In public or just to you? No, in the media, like in his media scrum. Ideally, we want to, yeah, okay. And... And I didn't know about that. So then I do my kind of welcome to spring training meeting with everybody. And they ask me, would you want to finish your career? Absolutely. I love it here. I'm comfortable here. They've done a lot for me. He said that, but we didn't know about it. And then this little... So you come out of the shower and he approaches you again. Yeah, because he was still here. I think he was just, you know, catching up with guys. Super easy to talk to. Yeah. So he comes over and he's like, hey, were you serious about the contract? He didn't even tell you. I don't even think it was on his radar until that conversation happened.
And I told him, I was like, yeah, I feel like I want to keep playing baseball. I don't... It just doesn't feel weird for me to be done after this year. Like, I just kind of want to keep playing. But if I keep playing, I want it to be here.
