So me and my girlfriend were out by the reserve just outside of Sussex, New Jersey, yesterday evening. The sun was barely touching the horizon, giving everything that flat dying orange light that happens before dusk. We wanted to hit the trail that cuts through the woods near the old reservoir, a spot that we'd been a dozen times before, but This time it felt off the second that we stepped off the gravel and into the treeline. The woods there are usually a mess of brambles and deadfall, but yesterday the undergrowth was unnervingly sparse. The trees were tall, spaced almost perfectly, like someone had come through with a measuring tape to line them up. It was dead silent. No birds, no rustle of squirrels, not even the usual hum of wind through the branches.

About twenty minutes in We both just stopped as well, and Right in the centre of the path was a bird. A blue jay, or what should have been one, is It was curled up in a tight awkward ball. The thing was completely impossibly black though, not just dark or in a shadow, but like it had been spray painted with matte black ink. There was no smell, and despite the warm air, the thing looked bone dry. I leaned in expecting to see ants or flies working on it, but there was nothing. It was just an empty dark husk sitting on the dirt. My girlfriend then grabbed my arm, a grip digging in, And she looked pale, like she had just been hit in the gut or something. I didn't have to ask though because I felt it too. A heavy, tight pressure radiating from the center of my chest.

And then it was like the air had suddenly dropped ten degrees and got twice as thick. But we didn't say a word. We just turned around and started heading back. The light was fading faster than it felt like it should have. By the time that we were halfway back, the path behind us was already swallowed by a weird sort of purple haze. And that was when we heard it. It started as a high, thin sound, a woman's voice, sharp and frantic, calling out for help. It sounded like it was maybe fifty yards behind us. But we kept moving, faster now, not wanting to run, but certainly wanting to be anywhere else but here. The voice it didn't get quieter too. It shifted. One second it was like almost right on her heels and then

What unsettling signs did the couple notice at the New Jersey reservoir?

It sounded like it was coming from the treetops to our left. Then suddenly it was muffled, like it was being shouted from inside of a tunnel. The pacing was all wrong too, but It wasn't the sound of someone walking behind us, but It was like the sound itself was sort of popping in and out of existence, jumping between points in the woods. I never really believed in the old stories that my grandmother told me back home when I used to live with her about things that mimic voices to pull you off the trail. But as we were speed walking toward the edges of the field, that same sound kept playing the same trick. Getting louder when we were already ahead and then sounding miles away just as we were looking back.

We broke out into the field. And the silence immediately snapped back into place. The crickets, they started up again. A car rattled by on the road in the distance, and the voice was now gone. We didn't talk about it until we got to the car because we were running so hard. We decided then and there, though, that we were not going to go back into those woods, not even when the sun was high, ever again, and Because there's certainly a difference between a weird noise and a weird noise that feels like it's hunting you. And this was definitely the latter of the
