News when you want it with Bloomberg News Now. I'm Doug Krisner. After the bell, Apple reported record sales for the holiday period. Revenue jumped 16 percent to $143.8 billion. This is for the quarter ending December 27th. Now, these results reflect strong demand for the iPhone 17, as well as growth in services and a rebound in China. Here is Bloomberg's Mark Gurman.
Mark Gurman 0:53
Massive, massive quarter. This is a home run. Their greatest quarter ever by orders of magnitude. It's a gigantic beat on overall revenue. China is back. You have a big beat on the iPhone in particular. $85 billion quarter is just insane. The installed base, $2.5 billion. The numbers are just beyond excellent.
Doug Krisner 1:18
That was Bloomberg's Mark Gurman. Shares in Apple were up 1% in late U.S. trading. SpaceX is considering a potential merger with Tesla or perhaps an alternative combination with the firm XAI, another Elon Musk company. We are told any transaction could attract interest from infrastructure funds and Middle Eastern sovereign investors. No final decisions have been made. We go to Capitol Hill next, where the deadline for a partial government shutdown is a day away. We are told President Trump and Senate Democrats are nearing a deal. Now, the negotiations include possibly placing new limits on immigration raids. According to Senate Majority Leader John Thune, the emerging deal would put the Department of Homeland Security on temporary stopgap funding.

Other agencies would get funding through September 30th. Here is Bloomberg's Tyler Kendall.

How did Apple perform during the holiday sales period?

Tyler Kendall 2:11
it's not clear what the white house will agree to and the real issue is even if there is an agreement this plan is going to require it to be kicked back down to the house no matter what and lawmakers in that chamber are out of session and out of washington until next week and the funding deadline is this friday at midnight which means that we are likely looking at a lapse in funding at least over the weekend and the house gets back into town plus there's no guarantee I'll point out that the House is even going to get behind this plan. We're already starting to hear from some House conservatives that are making some demands of their own.
Doug Krisner 2:44
That is Bloomberg's Tyler Kendall in Washington. President Trump saying today that he would announce his nominee for Fed chair next week. Trump also reiterated his expectation that the Fed's new leader will lower interest rates.
Donald Trump 2:57
We should have the lowest interest rate anywhere in the world. They should be two points and even three points lower. And each point is the equivalent of, I would say, $500 billion.
Doug Krisner 3:11
Whomever Trump chooses could face a rocky path to confirmation in the U.S. Senate. Republican Senator Tom Tillis, a member of the Banking Committee, is vowing to block any of the president's nominees to the Fed until the DOJ's probe into the central bank is resolved. We go to Minneapolis next, where the Trump administration is seeking to scale down the number of federal officials in the city. This is after protests against the killing of two U.S. citizens by ICE agents. White House border czar Tom Homan says ICE is working on a drawdown plan after cooperation from local, state, and federal officials.
Tom Homan 3:47
The drawdown is going to happen. based on these agreements. But the drawdown can happen even more if the hateful rhetoric and the impediment and interference will stop.
Doug Krisner 3:56
Homan said the Trump administration will be prioritizing arrest of known undocumented immigrants along with those who pose a public safety threat. Meantime, California Governor Gavin Newsom is criticizing the Trump administration's immigration crackdown in different cities.
