It's funny, the competitions from around the world that we don't know about. It's Brooke and Jeffrey in the morning. Like, did you guys know in Japan there's something called the Fried Chicken Grand Prix? No way. Let's go. Basically, where restaurants from all across the nation compete against each other for the best, most tasty fried chicken. Do they need a judge? I think they're set on that. Dang it. But this year, there was a little controversy when the owner of a restaurant called Wakatori gave an interview after winning the gold medal. Ooh. And they asked him, what's your secret to success? How do you make it so tasty?
Yes.
And his answer, he said, since they opened 66 years ago, they've never changed out the frying oil. Oh! Oh, my God. Okay, but before you judge him, the owner says the aged oil gives Wakatori fried chicken a complex aroma. Yeah, I bet. And unique flavor that cannot be replicated. The oil has to be black. It's 66 years old. That is awesome. So, as you can imagine, his comments caused quite the uproar on social media. Yeah, someone in the kitchen was like, we don't tell people that. Yeah. A lot of people are saying they're putting people's lives at risk by frying chicken in six-decade-old oil. Yes. Why don't they say secret ingredient? That's what I wanted to hear. Next time someone asks you, say salt. Salt's the secret.
How did the owner respond? He attempted to backpedal his original comment and said, well, I may have misspoke. It's not just the old oil. I'm also topping it off with some fresh oil mixed in. Perpetual oil. Yes. So that comment didn't really help either.
