How about I tell them what I did? So I could not go into too many details because I don't know who listens to the podcast. It might chime something into my wife's ear. But the surprise for our family, and listen, I love experiences. I will treasure and put a value on experiences far, far greater than stuff. So the family knew, we had already pre-planned, that we were driving to upstate New York, where I am from, the day after Christmas, which is also my sister's birthday. Our goal was to get there in time for a birthday dinner, hang out on Saturday, and then go to the Buffalo Bills game on Sunday. That was the goal that was been planned for months and months. Our objective was to get there again for my sister, but also to enjoy a game before that stadium is torn down.
I've been going to that stadium since I was a little tyke. So anyways, what the family did not know until Christmas morning was I had arranged for all of us to not drive the day after, but in fact fly up to New York City on Christmas Day. so that we could all attend Wicked on Broadway, which my family has become enamored with since the movies. And I think you were pretty into it, too. You, like, saw it on the opening night.
I saw it at midnight, and you gave me a lot of crap.

Well, I didn't go to it on midnight, but I did go, and I did see the second one. I was, of course, forced to watch the first one. I loved it. It was awesome. But, yeah, so my wife opened a series of gifts that recreated this, like, puzzle-like ticket. And pretty quickly you could tell that this was a wicked ticket. And I knew that in her brain she would think, we're going to go for my birthday, which is in a couple of weeks. So in her brain she's like thinking, oh, isn't that sweet? He got us tickets for my birthday. And then on one hand she probably was like, well, he got off with the Christmas plus the birthday gift, like whatever. But anyways, the last thing she pulled out of a box that was wrapped with
was the date and time, and it said 12, 28, 25, 8 p.m., and she was like, I'm sorry, what? That's tonight.

12, 25, 25. Well, there's a side story about that, too, because the first time I printed it, I actually put 1231 on it. And I was showing a buddy, and he goes, you're going on New Year's Eve? And I was like, no! I had to go reprint it again. Anyways, that was a whole other side story. But I was so glad he shared that with me. But anyways, she opened it up. She realized it was that night. And she was like, I'm sorry, what? And I said, yup. We're flying up this afternoon. And so she freaked out in a good way, as did all the other family members because they had no idea. We loaded up into the car, drove to the airport, got on a flight. And then the logistics, like I was on pins and needles for logistics the whole time because I thought we would be getting into the city, running to the theater, like trying to get in to see it.
Believe it or not, we made a 6 p.m. dinner reservation. Like, I had made that thinking, there's no way we'll get there. We'll be grabbing a slice of pizza before the 8 o'clock showing.
How did the surprise Broadway trip demonstrate valuing experiences over stuff?
We got to dinner literally at 6 o'clock, sat down, had a wonderful dinner, walked to the theater. It all worked out. It was amazing. It was absolutely amazing.
And how did the Broadway show stack up against the movies?
Condensed version, really similar. The gal who played Galinda was amazing. I mean, she was absolutely amazing.
