Welcome back. You're listening to another edition of DIY Money.
DIY Money.
What is wrong with me? You're struggling. That was terrible.
Are you still waking up? What's going on? Today, I'm going to call you out. This morning in our morning meeting at work, you came limping in the door.
What's happening?
What's happening?
Well, I had a—this is wild to think about. I had a 13.1 half marathon run this morning on a Wednesday.
You ran a half marathon this morning?
On a random Wednesday.
Okay, well, what's everybody else doing?
We're at the point of the training where mileage is really increased. Two weeks ago, I did, I think it was 65 miles in a week. which is just nuts. That's six, you know, it's averages. I run six days a week.
I don't know if I drive 65 miles a week.
Yes, you do. Yeah, definitely do. Over 10 miles a day every, you know, those six days. It was a lot.
That boy sure is a running fool.
And so, yeah, we're at that stage. But we're counting down. We have literally, after this week, will be five weeks until the marathon. The marathon is April the 12th. Where is this one? That is in Geneva, Illinois. It's outside of Chicago.
City of big shoulders and home, of course, to a certain football team, the Bears.
The Bears.
And it's a little town. It's actually a wonderful little town. I ran this same race in September of last year. Okay. It's a strong Boston qualifier race. It's flat. It goes around this little waterway. And you can set up fuel along the way. And so it's really designed. It's not scenic. You're not going to... see the city of Geneva, or you're not going to get cheered on by a bunch of people. You're going to put your head down. Well, you're going to look straight ahead and run for 26.2 miles at a very fast pace.
So this is, are you hoping to qualify on this one?
Or is this just getting you back? This is not just to qualify. And I have to stress that again for our listeners, because I
Those who missed that saga.
I qualified last year with a 4.10 gap.
Why does Quint talk about his marathon training and what context does it give?
So meaning my qualifying time was 3.15. I got a 3.10.50. So I had a buffer of four minutes and 10 seconds. And I thought I'm going to be golden. And I was not golden because the buffer had to be 4.34 or more, which means I missed it by 24 seconds. So when my friends go and line up at Boston a week later in April of this year, like all of my running friends, because basically everybody qualified, I will not be going.
Well, I don't like them.
And so I am running the same race again on April the 12th.
It's a revenge race.
Yes, but usually, it's interesting you say that. That is a common term in running, a revenge race, yes. But it's usually very shortly after you ran, and it rarely goes well. I take that back. You get done, and you're like, I can do it better. Yeah, I like that phrase better. There we go. But you're like, I can do it better, and you run out two weeks later, and then you just absolutely fail miserably. But my goal for this one, I think I was a little reluctant to share it last time, is a 305. So my goal is to run basically seven minute flats for 26.2 miles and come in at three hours and five minutes. And that will give me a 10 minute buffer. And I will be lining up at the 2027 Boston marathon. Now, I don't mind sharing all this publicly because I have already failed like on two separate occasions.
And if I fail again, it is what it is. I'm the man in the arena in this freaking thing. But it's been a long time coming. And I feel good. My body feels good. My training has been good. And I made it through. Knock on wood. Let's hope it doesn't happen anymore. I made it through that terrible ice and snow and cold that we had. And I trained all the way through it. And it was very difficult.
Did you train outside during that?
Most of it, yeah. Oh, really? Long, slow runs, always on the treadmill, but I'd had these workouts, and I'd go over to the paved parking lot across the street here at the Southern Christian Church, and I'd run around.
