Welcome back, ladies and gentlemen. You're listening to another edition of DIY Money. DIY Money. What's shaking? A. Howard, three for three today. Three for three. I love listening to our podcasts. I like listening to Logan and I, too, but there's something about your and my banter It's pretty fire. We're always roasting each other. We are roasters. Yeah. Yeah, we're the roasters. So now Banff is done. I would assume that you had saved and put money away for this.
Allie Howard 0:43
Oh, yes. Of course.
Quint (host) 0:44
So it's not like, oh, you know. And so was it within budget? Was there any surprises?
Allie Howard 0:47
We were a little bit over.
What's going on?
Allie Howard 0:49
I'm not going to lie. We were over by a couple hundred dollars, which in the grand scheme of my budget was fair and fine because we decided this is like a bucket list trip. We're going to, I mean, we camped, so we weren't like staying at the, what's the bougiest hotel?
Quint (host) 1:04
We weren't glamping. I don't know. We'll leave the light on for you. Four seasons.
Allie Howard 1:08
Sure. We weren't staying at the four seasons. The four seasons. We were staying in the four seasons, if you will.

How did Allie's recent Banff camping trip affect her budget and travel choices?

Quint (host) 1:13
Yes, you were. There it was. One of the four.
Allie Howard 1:16
But we did eat out quite a bit. What? How does that work? I know. Well, because we had a car. So for dinner, instead of going back to the campsite and making SpaghettiOs or whatever we were going to make, we would go get a burger and a beer.
Quint (host) 1:31
It was awesome. This doesn't fit in my brain. I know. I envision you like you have a backpack on. and you are in the mountains, what do you mean? How did you get to a car and then drive to dinner? To me, now my vision of you is like, oh, I'm eating at Cracker Barrel, and then I get in the car, I step in a parking lot, and my tent is over there in the grass just because I didn't want to stay at the Holiday Inn. I am blown away by this.
Allie Howard 2:01
This is weird to me. Let me make a distinction here. What? Backpacking is what I normally do where we're carrying our stuff the whole time. We are deep in the woods and you just hope for the best and you carry as light of gear as you can. We were camping this time, which in my brain is like glamping low key. So we stayed at a campsite and we had a car and then every day we'd get in the car, we'd drive to the national park.
Quint (host) 2:26
So like a KOA campsite, like when I'm driving down I-75 and I see like a KOA and like I'd see tents and stuff off to the right. I'm like, those people aren't camping. Like I don't view that as camping. I view that as like people were like laying on the ground. They don't want to stay in a hotel.
Allie Howard 2:40
Well, yeah, that's what we were doing. We were laying on the ground, not staying in a hotel. This campsite had showers. It was pretty nice, except the shower was like hot, cold, hot, cold situation. It wasn't that nice. So what we did, and we didn't eat out every night. We ate out, I think, three times. There's this little town called Banff. Banff the town, not Banff the national park. We were Banff as in Banff, if that makes sense. Makes perfect sense to me. But it's like kind of, and I got in trouble for saying this to Katie. So bear with me. It's kind of like Gatlinburg vibe. And she was like, this is nothing like Gatlinburg. and she got mad but what i mean is it's like all tourists 100 tourists a lot of restaurants and then shopping now we did not go shopping because it was like columbia and like all of these like nice brands patagonia right and so most of the people who stay in the town it is like 350 a night to stay in the town but it's super cute and the food was fire and i don't know if that was like we hiked all day so of course the burger's fire yeah which is fine but it was fire oh
Quint (host) 3:43
Okay, it makes a little more sense. I mean, it's so foreign to me. I would never, ever do this. And I'm not even going to live vicariously through this because I'm figuring you're in the mountains, you're in the woods, you're foraging for your own food, opening tuna, which sounds miserable to me.
