Welcome back, ladies and gentlemen. You're listening to another edition of DIY Money. DIY Money. Oh, back in the saddle today. It's been a while, Q. Man, I am, yeah, it has. Multiple weeks. I don't know how long, but I know a long time. It's really good to be back. Well, update us. Okay, so for those of you that are not aware, I attempted a very aggressive goal in a marathon a few weeks ago. I unfortunately did not hit said goal. Well, I hope you've learned something.

What personal race story sets the tone for this episode?

Quint (host) 0:51
I learned a lot. For those of you that are runners or have been runners or want to be runners, I will tell you that the mental aspect of running is always so fascinating. So we ran in Arizona. And had laid out a course, a buddy and I who'd been training for months. Literally, I looked back, it's like six months. And we, you know, whatever. And felt good about it. I got a lot worked up, a lot more worked up sort of leading up to it than I think I should have. Lesson number one. You're meaning like... Too hype about it? Anxiety. The thought of, hey, this is all, you know, all this six months and sacrifice is boiled into this one event. And that's never good. You start, you know, it's kind of like when you're investing or whatever and you start thinking, I got to make money on this investment.
Quint (host) 1:42
I got it. You know, that's not going to work. Right. And so that was lesson number one. I need to really work on that. But we started the race. It was amazing. Got through about 10 miles at the pace we were attempting to do, which was very fast for us or very fast for me. It was just very fast, period. But trained for it. Got to 13. Well, sort of at 10, I started realizing very quickly, I'm like, my legs are not, I don't have this. You were just shot. It was not shot, but I got these twinges of fatigue in my legs. And I was, I immediately, when that happened, I was like, oh, this is, you know, not good. And so at, I think it was 12 or something like that, you know, pop some fuel thinking maybe that will do the trick.
Quint (host) 2:30
It did not. And so around 13, halfway in, crossed the line and was on pace, was running around 7.10s, which is what we were trying to hit. Did a 1.35 for the first half, but I knew very quickly I was not going to reach the goal. My running partner had started to advance ahead. He, by the way, did. He absolutely crushed it. come on isn't anyone gonna say what we all better be thinking and uh so i had this mental breakdown i mean i'm just candid with you i was like well i'm not gonna hit this so i should stop my wife who was helping with hydration was at 16 she was at mile 16 she was at mile 8 and then again at 16 and in my mind i was like well i'm gonna see her at 16 i'm just gonna stop and i'll just jump in with her and finish the race and cheer my buddy on and whatever
Quint (host) 3:17
And so I got to 16, I saw her, I ran up and I just stopped and she's like, what are you doing? And I mean, she knew already because my buddy had already come through. I am outraged. And so I'm behind him and she's like, what are you doing? I'm like, I'm done. And she's like, what? And I'm like, yeah, I'm done. I'm not going to hit it. I'm done. And I was obviously very pissed off. I was very, you know, whatever. And so I proceeded to have, this is fascinating, a seven minute argument with myself and when I say like I could be diagnosed with split personalities in that moment like most rudders can on long runs I promise you or any endurance whether it's biking or swimming I promise you you get to a point where you have two totally different personalities and we had a mental argument
Quint (host) 4:02
And on one end, one side of my personality said, quit. You didn't get it. Why even exert the more energy? You just didn't do it. You can go back. You can start again if you want to. Maybe you don't. But this is ridiculous. The other side of me was like, and it was for a while, like this faint whisper was, you can't quit.
