Oh, ladies and gentlemen, have I got a treat for you. I am so excited. Obviously, you have been listening to the first two episodes. And hopefully you found a lot of value, but you are going to find some value in the episode today as I am interviewing two wonderful friends of mine, and one of which who has been a lifelong, almost life, well, feels like lifelong, 15-year mentor of mine, John and Carol Withers. Welcome to the show, John and Carol. Thank you. It's great to have you. I want to start right off. This is a Money in Marriage series. And so I want you to tell the folks how long you've been married. 64 years. 64 years. So when you go to weddings and they're like, oh, let's get all the married people on the dance floor.
Quint (host) 1:14
And then they're like, if you've been married an hour, step off. And the husband and wife step off. And then it's like, who's been married five years? And you win that every time, don't you? You are cracking up, John. Yes, we do. And does Carol roll her eyes like, I don't want to do this. I'll be up there all night. Yes. Yes, but you still do it. Yes. Oh, that's amazing. Wouldn't it be nice if they gave prizes out for that? They should. I think the next wedding I'm going to go to, I'm going to be like, listen, is the Withers going? Because I want to sponsor a prize and make sure they win something. 64 years. So obviously we're going to talk about money. We're going to get into that. But I think I would be remiss not to ask Carol, and I've heard people ask you this before, so I'm curious how you answer this today.
Quint (host) 2:00
What is the secret to 64 years of marriage, Carol?
Carol Withers 2:05
There really isn't a line of how it's successful. You're just determined. You're determined.
Quint (host) 2:11
So it's determination.
Carol Withers 2:13
Determination.
Quint (host) 2:13
Okay.
Carol Withers 2:15
And you have to remember what brought you together. What's the fascinating part that brought you together?
Quint (host) 2:21
And so when you are in the midst of the trials and tribulations throughout those 64 years, what is it that was fascinating that brought you together 64 years ago?
Carol Withers 2:31
We were young and had puppy love.
Quint (host) 2:34
So do you try to then remember that puppy love?
Carol Withers 2:37
Yes.
Quint (host) 2:37
Okay. Yes. Well, I know I can attest to this, that I have observed the marriage for, again, as long as I've known you, which I think maybe, has that been 15 years, maybe 20 years now? I don't know.

How did John and Carol meet and what’s the secret to 64 years of marriage?

Quint (host) 2:48
It seems like a long time. and the generations that you have brought into this world, and now the children and the grandchildren and so forth. So I know, John, you know this because you cite this to me regularly. How many grandchildren and great-grandchildren are there now? Eight grandchildren. Eight grandchildren.
John Withers 3:09
Age 45 to 20. Okay. And 12 great-grandchildren age 20 to four months.
Quint (host) 3:20
Awesome. And what I like is that you have relationships with all of these people because on any given day, You are – I'm talking to you. By the way, John and I get together every Friday morning for breakfast at Waffle House. Don't judge us for the Waffle House. They got the best grits in town. That's why we're there. And we've tried other places, and we keep coming back to Waffle House. So shout-out to Teresa, who happens to be our server there basically every Friday. But on any given Friday, John will be like, well, we just got back. We were in the car. We were in Columbus. We were in Missouri. We were in Florida. We were here. We were there. We were everywhere. 90% of the time, it's visiting someone, a grandkid, a great grandkid, more often than not, doing something.
Quint (host) 4:05
Like while we were at a track meet and watching this whatever. And so that's very important to you, isn't it, family, and seeing them and spending time with them?
John Withers 4:14
I consider family the number one value in life, and I didn't always, but Carol always has.
Quint (host) 4:23
So you went through some phases.
John Withers 4:25
Oh, I got too wrapped up in work.
