One month out.
Yeah.
Quint (host) 0:28
I mean, I guess maybe by the time this airs, I will be at this moment in time. I'm a little bit more than six weeks away. Three weeks of hard work, three weeks of taper, and I feel good. That boy sure is a running fool. Knock on whatever that is for Micah. I'm really excited about it. There's been a major shift in a couple of things from my training perspective. Working on the legs. I hate doing leg work. Any real runner, whatever. If you run, you're a runner. But anybody that's training for something, trying to avoid injury, more than likely, you also are doing leg work. More than likely, you hate leg work. I hate it. But it has been a total game changer. Last week, I ran about 60 miles in a week. And outside of a race week...
Quint (host) 1:13
That's the most I think I've ever run in a week. And when I say race week, like if I ran a 50K or if I went, you know, it could have clearly jumped me over 60. But I was I was healthy and I felt great. And I mean, running a 20 miler never feels great. But it's like I mean, I felt good. I was able to just come right back. And I think legwork has been just an absolute game changer.
Allie Howard 1:34
Can you define legwork for me?
Quint (host) 1:37
I'll say it. I mean, it's daunting to even talk about. So this morning I did it. No, no, no. No, so legwork is in the gym outside of running. Like this morning I did a six and a half or seven mile run, easy run with friends. And then I immediately drove to the gym and did 25 minutes of stupid like calf raises and single leg raises and deadlifts. Bulgarian split squats, they're the worst. I hate them. They burn like crazy. Quads, blah, blah, blah, hamstrings. I mean, 25 minutes, it's not difficult, but it's just, I hate it. I can't stand it. And it took me a good four weeks to get over the delayed onset muscle soreness because that, I mean, I couldn't walk. Like, you can't walk. You can't sit down. Your legs hurt.
Quint (host) 2:24
Your butt hurts. It's awful. But it's been a game changer. It's helped me avoid injury. It kept me strong, and I think it'll sustain me. The other thing has been nutrition.

How does Quint describe his recent training routine and legwork benefits?

Quint (host) 2:33
I read a book recently called The New Nutrition Guide for Marathon Training or something like that by this gentleman named Matt Fitzgerald for runners out there. It's been a game-changer for me, an absolute game-changer. So I'm trying to get in. I mean, this is crazy. What am I, nuts?
Allie Howard 2:50
You're not 47.
Quint (host) 2:51
I'll say it. I'll be 48 in a couple weeks, and I'm talking like I'm a 25-year-old. I mean, it's very encouraging, but this is dumb. This is ridiculous. Why do I do this stuff? Look at them legs. Look at them legs. They're amazing. Look at them legs.
Allie Howard 3:06
You will not catch me lifting weights. Why do I do this?
Quint (host) 3:11
You're an observer of me. I don't want to break me down psychologically, but what is my deal? This is nuts sometimes.
Allie Howard 3:18
Single tear is forming. I don't know.
Quint (host) 3:22
Clearly, if you've listened to this podcast longer than a cup of coffee, you know by now. When I get into something, I don't go halfway. There's no halfway. I'm like, why do it if you're not going to try to do something amazing?
Allie Howard 3:34
We're so opposite in that because there's like an actual gym, like weights situation machines at the climbing gym. And so all the really good climbers, they climb two days and they lift weights two days and they do who knows what the other, like they're so into it. And occasionally they'll be like, oh, I never see you in the gym. I'm like, yeah. And you won't because this is a fun thing. Like I'm not going to look at all the fun rocks and all the projects and then be like, no, I'm going to go run four miles on the treadmill. No. No! Miss me with that. That's terrible.
Quint (host) 4:06
Yeah, see, what happens to me is I'll start something, and then I'll take an interest in it, and then I'll start going down the rabbit holes of this type of thing.
