Why do the hosts often recommend index funds while still analyzing individual stocks?

Daniel 0:00

Ladies and gentlemen, you're listening to another edition of DIY Money. DIY Money. Not much. What's shaking with you? You keep deflecting.
Logan (host) 0:23
I do. I'm a deflector.
Quint Tatro 0:24
I have been re-listening to the DIY Money episodes, and it's like, hey, what's shaking?
Logan (host) 0:28
Not much.
Quint Tatro 0:29
What's shaking with you? You're going to have to come with some game. So I'm not going to let you talk. You already deflected, so I'll give you an update on me. I'm rolling into marathon. You know, January the 11th is the big day. Arizona, very excited. I am at peak training right now, which sucks. I mean, it's 20 degrees out this morning.
Unknown 0:48
What did you do this morning?
Quint Tatro 0:49
Some tempo miles inserted into a run. What that just means, so everybody is aware, because these are all new things to me too, is you have marathon pace, which is what your goal time is. Mine is a 7.10. And then tempo miles, which are about 6.40. And they're dumb. I mean, just a dumb pace.
Logan (host) 1:07
It's ridiculous. This is just a dead-out sprint, basically.
Quint Tatro 1:10
No, not at all. Those are like 540s on the track. That's where you're about to die. But you don't do that very long. So this was a two-mile warm-up followed by three miles at tempo, two-mile cool-down. And I had a buddy, my current training partner is out west. He's on a business trip enjoying 65 degrees and nonsense sunshine. And here I am at 17 degrees and cold.
Unknown 1:33
Right. This will not stand, you know? This aggression will not stand, man.
Quint Tatro 1:37
And so I had another buddy, part of the Chevy Chasers running crew. Shout out to you all. Great crew. He paced this morning, and it was hard. I was not great. I did the first mile at 635, and then the next two a little bit over, and I was tired. It's been a long week. Well, and you said the mental side of things is really what you're trying to get through.
Logan (host) 1:58
Brutal.
Quint Tatro 1:58
Mental is absolutely 100%. I've never faced anything like this in my life. As of right now, it is December the 5th. To be quite candid, I have no idea how I'll do this. Mentally, I'm not there yet. And I'm really trying to get there. I'm doing everything from... you know, subconscious development, looking at note cards. It's just, it seems like an insurmountable task. And that is terrible. If I don't get my head right, it will not happen. And I know that.
Quint (host) 2:29
You'll get there. I'll get there. I know you will. Okay, boomer. I'm not a boomer. I'm Gen X.
Quint Tatro 2:33
All right, let's roll right in. We got questions, some odds and ends on the housekeeping side. First of all, keep the questions coming. First of all, it's how the whole thing works. Send them to podcast at diymoney.org. That's podcast at diymoney.org. Audio question. If we use it on the show, we'll send you a $25 Amazon gift card. Great way to get some holiday stocking stuffers. So keep those questions coming. I love them. Check us out on social, DIY Money Podcast, and follow me on Twitter or X now, I guess, at Quint Tatro. That's a double T in there. And this episode is sponsored by Jewel Financial, J-O-U-L-E, financial.com, which this first question is going to give us a little chance to talk about that.
Quint Tatro 3:15
That'll be kind of cool. So, Matt, what do you got?
D-I-Y.
Unknown 3:19
Hey, DIY Money, Matt here. I noticed Quint was in the movie, Dumb Money. Well, not really, but there's a screenshot of his face on there talking. I assume he was on TV talking about stocks. Just curious, what is the value as a firm that recommends index funds, mutual funds to go on TV and speak about individual stocks, as well as what do you think that individual investors who you know, invest via mutual funds and index funds can learn from following the stock markets and individual stocks. We'd love to just kind of hear your thoughts on that. Have a good one.
Quint Tatro 3:58
All right. I love this question, Matt. Good catch on the dumb money. Don't slight me, though. Come on. I was in the movie. I'm as simple as that. I didn't have a speaking part. It was a screenshot of the time I was on CNBC.
