What is the Entrepreneurial Operating System (EOS) and why does it matter for estate agencies?

Mark Burgess 0:00
Welcome to this episode of Estate Agency X. Today, myself and Rob are talking to Adrian Lomas, who is an EOS implementer. That probably doesn't mean a great deal to you, but an EOS implementer is somebody that has followed the book Traction, which talks about an entrepreneurial operating system. It was written by a guy called Gino Wickman, and it is a way of running your business more successfully to have more clarity around what you do and know what direction you're going in. Adrian is one of the mentors that comes in to talk to agents on our 18 Cause Business Accelerator program that we put agents through. And he talks to people about how to do it. So today we dig into his backstory, the businesses that he run, the problems that he faced, and the things that he finds when he works with businesses that really help them to put the rocket fuel into what they're doing.

Okay, Adrian, thanks for coming in. Can you just give the listener a bit of background on yourself?
Adrian Lomas 1:17
Sure. Well, I started my own company, well, back in the last century, if you like. I was a digital creative agency up in the Northwest and a grueling agency up there. And at some stage, I discovered the EOS, the Entrepreneurial Operating System. implemented that into my business grew the business and effectively sold the business in 2019 for a healthy sum and after that I worked for the company for like four years going through the sort of the exit if you like and then picked up EOS again picked up a book a book called Traction read it made sense and basically I bought a franchise and since then I've just been out helping leadership teams to get what they want from their business. That's simply what I do.
Adrian Lomas 2:02
I just help and work with entrepreneurial leadership teams to help them to implement a complete proven system just using simple, practical tools. That's what I do.
Mark Burgess 2:12
I love it. And I've seen you do that on our 18-course workshop, do it brilliantly. But I want to just dig into... Some of the things that the listeners might find relatable because, you know, they're all estate agents mostly listening to this show and they might think like, okay, you mentioned digital marketing business. Are we talking about digital marketing? Are we talking about EOS traction business? So... Really, I don't know if you'd sort of maybe summarize it differently to me, but I've got a lot of experience with traction as well and EOS. And I think it's really something that helps a business owner to give them clarity around what's the fucking point of your business? Why does it even exist and how does it exist?
Mark Burgess 3:04
And so, what was it that you were going through in your old businesses the first time that you picked up the book and thought like, this is the answer to my problems?
Adrian Lomas 3:14
Yeah. Well, it... Yeah, so the story is that I was running my agency and, you know, it's doing well. We were working Red Bull, Laura Ashley Tate, Next, you know, a lot of good brands that we're working with from a creative point. But I think a bit of hubris kicked in and life-changing things. 2013 was my horrible year. My mom passed away, went through divorce, which was never nice. And then I was told it over-traded. So effectively, I'd lost the plot in my own company, you know. Now I'm in a point where my business, I'm told to close the door because I'm financially broke and also my business is sort of told to wrap it up. But it was at that point when I was living under my desk, which I literally did, lived under my desk for three months of my life, somebody gave me the book Attraction.
Adrian Lomas 3:58
Regina Whitman wrote it, a book on how to run a business. And I read it and I thought, that's quite simplistic. And I probably know most of this stuff, but I don't think I'm really doing it properly. I didn't have the rigor in my business to do it. I was, you know, sleeping under my desk skin and therefore not getting it right.
