What is the impact of the historic storm on the U.S.?
A historic storm. I'm Debra Valentine, Fox News. Snow, ice, and cold are forecast for two-thirds of the U.S. Fox Weather's Kiana Lewis has the latest.
We know that snow is primarily the big deal for the northern peripheral of this heading into the latter half of the weekend. The jackpot for the snow is going to be between Boston and New York City. Over a foot of snow expected. Now, the not-so-fun side of this is going to be the ice. This is the dangerous part of the storm. We're looking at some pretty thick
ice, especially across parts of northern Mississippi out towards Louisiana, southern Arkansas. Could see three quarters of an inch of ice and may even see some sleet in there too. This transitions over towards the southeast up into the mid-Atlantic at times. Half an inch of ice could certainly bring in widespread power outages. We could see that and expect that across parts of the South as well.
At least 18 states are under states of emergency. After barreling through the central and southern portion of the U.S., this massive winter storm will target the Northeast. Boston 25 News' Alyssa Azara reports from Chelsea, Massachusetts.
Here in Chelsea, trucks have been busy loading up with salt ahead of this Sunday. The manager of Eastern Salt here tells me there's about 75 to 100,000 tons of salt here. The trucks are replenishing salt yards throughout Massachusetts and even southern New Hampshire so cities and towns can be prepared and keep their roads treated before and during the storm.
Manager Cornelius Martin tells me Eastern Salt has been busy treating icy roads for about six weeks now, and he says ice is the main concern when driving through the weather we're expecting. He says a couple hours before the storm is when you'll start to see those salt trucks on the roads.
The storm could bring more than a foot of snow to Massachusetts and other parts of New England. More than 8,000 flights have been canceled through Sunday due to the storm system, according to FlightAware.com. America's listening to Fox News.
