They couldn't get him to stop bleeding, so they took him off to hospital and they operated on him, which basically requires puncturing the fascia and getting the blood out. But we're led to believe if he hadn't done that and just had stayed at home and tried to ice it like most people would have, he could have lost a leg.

Well, yeah, it's a very unusual injury. from what started as a really common injury. Anyway, the good news is he seems to be okay. He's going to be back within a few weeks. It won't be too long now until he's back. They do recover pretty quickly from that, but it just shows you how badly it could have gone.
