What is the core problem with price wars that the host and John Dwyer discuss?

John Dwyer 0:00
We walked away with seventy seven thousand instead of five. And why? Because I gave it for free. And so in your game, I don't think it'd be any different. You're in the advisory game, that's what I'm in. I would probably create a freemium model whereby you would give and I don't know enough about the success of your product, but nonetheless, I would do something whereby they get enough for free so that they fall in love with what you've got to sell.

Your life, ladies and gentlemen, and you're once again welcome to the Kingdoms Podcast and Diary of the CFO. And today I've got with me a very, very special guest. Fighting out of the Willow Town Under, out of Australia. Big welcome, John Aguyer. How are you today, John?
John Dwyer 0:43
Well, that is a a a good intro. It's uh sounds very much like a boxing in intro. That's a UFC intro. Did you by the way, did you know that the guy in America who uh did the get ready to rumble, he's actually trademarked that particular phrase and whoever uses it needs to pay him a royalty fee. I couldn't believe that.
Ademola Odewade 1:05
Yes. And of course he his name is Michael Buffer. And uh you know the interest into him. Is it Bruce Buffer is his half brother and he is the announcer for the UFC. So Bruce Buffer's style is what I use. So I need to get ready. I need to trade back my introduction. I need to also trade back my introduction. Wow. So uh I love to give people their flowers while they are still alive. So I have written down an introduction for you. So please sit back while I uh give you your flowers. So ladies and gentlemen, you're welcome to another powerful episode of the Kingdoms podcast and diary of a CFO. John Dwyer 2:41
Thank you for inviting me. I know that you probably had two or three other two or three other guests that cancelled, so therefore I was number four. You gave me a call and I said, Yeah, I'm available.
Ademola Odewade 2:50
I got I I got your email when you said, Oh, how come the the the session is two hours long? Because I think you will get rid of me by thirty minutes. Let us see how that goes.
John Dwyer 3:01
That's what I said to you. Yeah, when you said to me that, you know, because you have interesting guests guests for quite some time, I I think I said to you, Well, I'm not interesting. I think we'll be in and out within thirty minutes.
Ademola Odewade 3:12
But then, you know, uh before heating the recording, we've actually been speaking for more than thirteen minutes. So I am broken your curse already. I wean. So take us back to the beginning. What experiences shaped your journey into marketing and entrepreneurship?
John Dwyer 3:28
Yeah, look I've been, you know, in the marketing game for a long time. I'm a baby boomer so that uh that, you know, tells you that I've been doing this for thirty or forty years and uh nothing's really changed. over that period of time except the speed of communications. And so what used to work on perhaps magazines and newspapers and and letterbox brochures and so forth now works on YouTube and uh the other platforms. But the ideas from yesteryear are just still as relevant today as they once were. And I kicked off a thousand years ago in the retail sector in Australia. There's a big supermarket chain in Australia called Woolworths. And I was lucky enough at an early to be involved in the marketing of that big supermarket chain.
John Dwyer 4:08
And what I found is that whilst brand building of course is very, very important, we buy Toyota because it's Toyota and we buy BMW because it's BMW and all of that.
