What is the parity debate in Supercars and why is it important after The Bend?
I've been pretty vocal from day one that there's been differences spoken out on my podcast.
It was cool to have both the lucky dogs up there though race and I thought we might see if the podcast's still going next week actually after this one.
Welcome back everyone to episode 49. Uh there's a lot to delve into here. We're going to be talking about parody going into the bend. Wills just adjusting a few of his frames behind him. Um it was a pretty big point being discussed going into the round, and I feel like there was a lot of politician going on silently behind the background, obviously leading up to the event. And there was it it eventually got leaked a couple of days before the subreggs won out that you know there's gonna be some proposed changes to the GM for. For the third time this year?
Yeah, like you said, there's a lot of politics that goes on behind the scenes that the fans don't see, but also as you know, for us sometimes as drivers, you don't always see it as well because the team's dealing with it and all that side of it. And obviously us being the homologation team, we're probably dealing with it even more behind the scenes from Jamie Level and Pete and those guys to, you know, tryna our our job at the end of the day and every team's job is to stop those changes and give a team an advantage and it's not it's not, you know, no matter what, you're trying to prevent that from happening, but also I believe that um We thought it was actually an advantage. It wasn't a parody change.
It was more the changes that were made on the weekend and I think that were demonstrated from my side. I believe that, you know, you saw in practice that they're actually it felt like nearly B O P or or that side of it. Like it was a massive ad advantage in practice on that side of things. But yeah, I don't know. They're also saying that is You know, they also changed it back and tried getting it what they're calling get it in the the box. They've got a box that the parody window sits in. For the down force. For the downforce. I don't kinda know why we spent a lot of money to go overseas and do all the wind tunnel testing and that and then it it's understood that what they did to the front, which was what was that, that they actually won
There's like a tunnel that goes basically. So you've got the front splitter that's around the front of the car, and in the middle there's like a gap where it's raised so air can actually flow onto the car when we break, so it doesn't stall the air basically going under the front of the car. That was 300 mil wider than what it was. Uh sorry, 300-300 mil wider last year. They got narrowed up so the pitch sensitivity, so the down force um would match the. The the forward and and the and the super under brakes. Yep. So last year the Chev had quite a big advantage with the balance going rearwards under brakes. Um and well it wouldn't be going rearwards, it just wouldn't be going as far forwards. Is that right?
Oh, that's true. No, it actually went rearwards, I believe. Oh really? Oh really? Yeah, I I could be wrong, but it actually lost front. That's improving. Or maybe that was 2023 spec. But it yeah, anyway, so it basically would choke, it wouldn't choke off the air going on under the car. And it was quite a big advantage under brakes and these cars we all know are very, very hard to brake.
Yeah, yeah,
it's a biggest change. Um they wanted to widen that tunnel back up, so they widened it at seventy mil than what it's being currently run this year. So, you know, two, two hundred and odd mil still narrower than the year before. And they uh got point three degrees more wing angle leading into the event. Well, yeah,
they obviously got the tunnel change, um, which looked like a maybe a Too big of a step in practice. I think that's where it came from. On the Friday, there were, you know, at one stage, I think like the top seven were Chev during during practice. And then at the end there, you know, a couple of Fords went faster, but there was a lot of Chev's in the top ten.
