Fran Tarkenton has claimed that part of the reason the Vikings have struggled in his Super Bowls, they were 0-4, I'm sure you've been here long enough to know that, as a team. I think Joe Capp had one of those. But anyway, that They didn't, in the two weeks, the first of the two weeks, the Vikings never practiced. And that Fran was frustrated by that, never understood it.
And I'd never gotten confirmation from anybody else who played on those teams. And Chuck did, too. And Chuck said the same thing. Said, we hated it. We were ready to go. It's the Super Bowl. And it just fascinates me because I assume these days... there's no chance that you'd take a full week off. You might maybe take a couple days, right? But does that surprise you?
As legendary as Bud is? I can tell you back in 2021, my life would have been a lot different if Sean McVay gave us the full week off. No, the way we looked at it is we could get the game plan in as if we were going to be practicing and then playing that weekend. So then what happened? Then you got to fight just like you do for the opener. You got to fight the volume. You got to fight the over analysis that you can do. But maybe, you know, is that angle right? Should we be going deeper on this? Should this be a wide zone instead of a tight zone? And that happened a little bit. But I know our players, because when the actual week comes, especially nowadays, shoot, we were a home team playing in L.A. in our home stadium when we won in 2021.
But there's still so many layers to that week. From family coming in to the distractions of worldwide media covering the game. So you really have to make sure you have your players' attention for both weeks. Now, that doesn't mean that you're going to be tackling live like you may do some weeks, depending on when your bye week is throughout the season. You might get a little work here and there. But at this point, you've played so long. Sure. The week is really not going to do much, maybe for the speed guys getting their legs back a little bit, but it's going to be the Super Bowl. So by the time that game comes around, you would rather be as prepared as possible. And I don't know what the particular reasons were that they did that at that time.
Maybe there was something. that caused them to do that. But, no, it has definitely changed, you know, especially the year we went.
Well, I was reminded when we were talking with Chuck, and I'm sure you know this, players forget nothing because he mentioned one of his other complaints was we tried to reinvent the wheel.
