How does Geoffrey introduce tonight’s rainy, nostalgic setting?
Hey, I'm Geoffrey, and welcome back to Nightfalls. How's your day been? I hope it's been fruitful, but that you're now able to let it all go and have a restorative sleep. If you're enjoying the show, please do share us with friends and family. It helps us a huge amount and hopefully we can help them to a wonderful sleep. It's pouring cats and dogs outside, it's almost monsoonal, and I haven't been out with Otto yet, but I'm looking forward to it. I can't wait for the petrichor, the scent of the world when rain falls after a dry period, for the sound of the water thrashing against the leaves, and the sight of the burn tumbling toward the river, and ultimately the sea. A magical atmosphere that often brings me right into the present moment.
The woods so alive and vibrant, they seem to shout for your attention. Otto and I usually get the world to ourselves on days like these too. What a treat, even if we are going to get soaked. In tonight's story, we're venturing back in time to 1998. There, we follow in the steps of a young man who decides to head to the Mall of America on a rainy evening. He takes in different sights and smells, chooses a few movies for the weekend, and wanders past the storefronts. Slowly, the mall begins to wind down, and he ends his visit throwing pennies into the fountain.

You know, there are a lot of different places here in Night Falls, but during the day, I still find myself wanting to learn a little more about the world. That's what led me to Everything Everywhere Daily. It's one of the most popular daily education podcasts, even recently ranked the number one history podcast. And each episode is about 10 minutes, so it's easy to fit into your day. They cover everything from history and science to fascinating people and moments you might never have come across otherwise. Some recent episodes I really liked include one on the history of curling, which as a Scot I have a soft spot for, tracing it back to medieval Scotland.
Or their episode on the world's greatest art museums, which I found myself really drawn to. I've always loved art, and hearing the stories behind these places makes it feel surprisingly immersive. So if you like the idea of learning something new without it ever feeling like work, Learn something new every single day with Everything Everywhere daily. Find it on Apple Podcasts, Spotify or wherever you get your podcasts. If you've ever wanted to lose yourself in a land of wizards, goblins, and creatures that really shouldn't be able to talk, somewhere between the tales we tell here and somewhere entirely new, Hello from the Magic Tavern is waiting for you. It's an improvised comedy podcast set in the fantastical land of Foon, hosted by Arnie Niekamp alongside his co-hosts, Udisor the Wizard and Chunt the Talking Badger.
Each episode, they interview the creatures, spellcasters, and adventurers that wander through from throughout the land. A mix of storytelling, improv comedy, and pure absurdity.
Find Hello from the Magic Tavern wherever you listen to your podcasts. Alright, now back to Nightfalls.
Now take a moment to get comfortable where you are, and then note the feeling of your body resting, and slowly breathe in, letting your chest and stomach rise naturally. Pause, then exhale fully, releasing any tension or distracting thoughts with the breath. Now let your breathing return to a calm and natural rhythm. In and out. Slow and steady. And when you're ready, we can begin. One late afternoon, I was at home. Alone. And the rain fell outside. A gentle tap-tap against the windows. I lay on the couch and listened. I had no plans, and so I decided to go to the mall. In the car, I heard the rain on the roof, and it calmed me as I drove. Pitter patter, pitter patter. There was something so soothing and repetitive about the sound that allowed my thoughts to wander freely.
I thought of the opening day at the Mall of America a few years back.
