So then we get ready for the start of a training camp with the Edmonton Oilers. The Edmonton Oil Kings get going a little quicker. And joining us to talk about everything is the general manager of the hockey club, Kurt Hill. Hey Kurt, how you doing? Doing great, how are you? Fine, thank you. How was your summer?
Oh, it was good, yeah. Short time with uh it was short, but uh got a lot accomplished, lots of sp time with the family, which is nice, but ready to get back in the ranks here.
Can you believe how fast this is coming? Because your first preseason game is the fifth of September. It just seems like wow. It's just unbelievable.
Yeah, it does go quick, especially in junior. I mean the c um pretty much our most of the guys will be back in town this weekend and uh yeah, camp kicks off on on Wednesday next week, so it's uh exciting times for us here.
Is this uh you know, I'm I'm sure you've been having all sorts of things run through your head all through the summer about how's this lineup gonna look, who's gonna play with who, that type of thing. Do you try to stay away from that or is that important stuff as you head into training camp?
Well, I think again is you know, when you sit down with the staff and you have lots of conversations over the summer, it's uh You know, I can say that uh, you know, lots of the conversations that somewhere are pretty optimistic with the group and, you know, where we think we are as a team, but at the end of the day it's You know, it's w what the guys are gonna have to do on the ice, it's gonna dictate what we are as a group and you know, I think probably not until we get through training camps and start getting into the bulk of some of the schedule in early October we'll have a better idea how we're how we're looking and uh but but certainly As a whole, we're optimistic about the season and the group we have
Hey Kurt, one of the big stories obviously over the summer is the fact that you've signed yourself a new coach and is a guy we're very familiar with in Jason Smith. How how did that whole search go about and how did Jason pop up?
Yeah, the search, I mean, it was an ongoing process for a while. It was um it was an interesting year in the in the head coaching market this year just in the sense of there was so much in so many changes at every level of hockey and um you know so got the opportunity to talk to a lot of people and I think, you know, later in the summer Jason had made the decision that uh he wasn't gonna go back to his his American league job and um had reached out and we started conversations and, you know, it just really felt like since day one we've been on the same page and, you know, he fits a he fits a type of coach and culture that we wanna we wanna have here in Edmonton And um yeah, he it's been great having him around here with the staff and um yeah, he's hit he's certainly hit the ground running and and working hard and getting ready to to learn as much as he can about this group before they get here next week.
It's one thing to have Jason say it, but I'm kinda curious to know what do you think he brings to the table and brings to this organization?
Yeah, like I told like I said, l the culture build's gonna be huge. I think it's any time you have a A guy that's been the captain in the in the HL and played as many games as he has and coached at many different levels and you know, was a guy that uh dictated it through his play and just his leadership abilities that when he was a player that, you know, probably kept him around the NHL for a long time.
