And now to an extended, long-format interview with Edmonton Oilers General Manager Stan Bowman. Well, Stan, thank you for taking time to join us here on Oilers Now and 880Chad. And, wow, what a day. We had you on the show yesterday, but you weren't done. You ended up signing four more players after our interview took place during the course of yesterday's show at about 3.45 p.m. I think the place to start, though, really, in spite of the fact that maybe he made a smaller trade to begin with before it all went down, was the Darnell Nurse trade to the San Jose Sharks. How did that, I mean, it must have been a unique situation given the request from Darnell and what he has meant to this organization and the team over the last several years.
Yeah, I think you can't really start the conversation without acknowledging what a huge member of this team that Darnell was for so many years. Such a competitor on the ice, incredible teammate, incredible member of the community, very durable. he didn't miss many games in his time here he always gave it his best and stood up for his teammates so we're definitely going to miss that element and those are tough those are tough conversations i know darnell you know takes some criticism and a lot of that's unfair so i think when you step back from all that you recognize how great of a guy he is and an important player he was. So we wish him well, and we wish his family well there in a new opportunity, and hopefully it's a fresh start for him and things are great.
And for us, where we were, there's no question that our salary cap is a challenge, and we have so much more flexibility now. So that deal took some time to come together. Was there a point where you thought...
Darnell might be back with the Edmonton Oilers this season. If you didn't, he gave you a list of three teams. It's been reported that those three teams were Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, and Boston. But was there a point where you thought Darnell still might be an Edmonton Oiler next season?
Yeah, definitely. We were going through for several weeks. We were working on that and trying to find the right match for... for Darnell and also that would be a good fit for us. And when you go through that process and there's often times when it didn't look like there was a pathway forward for us to be able to do this, but I think getting the deal done to not retain any of the salary was very crucial for us. And that's where San Jose came in. You know, they have a different salary cap structure than us. They're a team that's building and they don't have as many commitments as a lot of other teams do. So it lined up well. And then the return was also something that was really appealing to us.
um to get a couple defensemen back that uh we think highly of well uh shakir makamadulan who does need a new deal he's a restricted free agent right now former first round pick of the new jersey devils i think he went came over in the timo meyer trade if i'm not mistaken and then a prospect that you know something about so maybe just a thought on the two players that were acquired
Yeah, Mukma Dhillon is a big, long-range, left-shot defenseman who played almost split his time between right and left defense. I think he actually played a little bit more on the right this season, so that's flexibility.
