And this is a six foot four right shot defenseman. He's sixteen, first D man in the dub in forty years to score twenty plus goals. But he makes a better stretch pass than anybody in the league, and he's sixteen. It's unreal how he can see the whole and he scored twenty goals. Chris, he was not on their first unit power play. Okay? It's not like this was first unit power play stuff. He scored twenty. First time it's happened in forty years in the West. But he is on the first unit PK. Uh he's with the Victoria Royals.
His name's Keaton Verhoff. They just wrapped up. Uh they're they lost to Spokane in six, they lost Three overtime games to Spokane. Spokane had the two best uh forwards, the two best older forwards in the league, because Gavin McKenna's in Verhoff's draft year in 2026. He played fifty-eight minutes in game six over fifty five on five against Spokane's top line. So uh and it the he's I would say he's a cross between Chris Bronger and Brent Seabrook. That's sort of who he plays like. And and understand And do you think that's the lost art for defense is the ability To let the puck do the work.
A little bit, yeah. I think, you know, because skating has taken such a Uh, you know, if you can't skate, you know, you hear the term you can't skate, you can't play now. So everybody really focuses on edge work and skating and well, unfortunately, as we both know, the puck moves way faster than you can skate. You know, you can shoot the pass the puck, shoot the puck, you know, seventy, eighty, ninety miles an hour. Uh we can only skate twenty five to thirty miles an hour max. Uh for the for the most elite of skaters. So yes absolutely. Letting the puck do the work. Uh and then supporting the attack. Uh, you know, i is I I would say you know, uh Evan Bouchard does a really good job. You don't really see him leading the attack.
He makes that good first pass and then he jumps up and it and supports the attack. You know, second, third option a lot of times and Um, you know, I I think you see the the good offensive defensemen of the league, you know, outside of uh a Quinn Hughes or Kale McCarr who are incredible skaters, most of them are that w what you're describing where they let the the puck do a lot of the work and then support with their legs and kind of find the scenes and get into the hole.
