We talked about the excitement level with the Edmonton Oilers training camp coming up in the middle of September. It's coming up the middle of this week for the Edmonton Oil Kings, and it's our pleasure to bring on the show the new head coach of the Oil Kings, Jason Smith. Gator, how you doing? Are you there, Gator? Yeah, I can hear you. Excellent. How you doing? Every are you pumped up and ready to go this week?
Jason Smith 1:37
Yeah, very excited, very excited. I think uh obviously I've been here for about a week and a half now and uh somewhat got settled uh away from the rink and obviously looking forward now to uh Getting things going and getting on the ice and uh being a part of the uh the Oil Kings and uh you know, really pushing the guys to uh get off to a strong start to the season.
Bryn Griffiths 1:58
You can get settled in a week and a half. That's amazing. To me.
Jason Smith 2:01
Well, try to anyways, yeah. Try to try to get as much done as possible but before we get uh into the heat of being at the rink every day and uh As much as I could get done now and in the lead up to it, uh was obviously uh something that was important to try and find the the right next uh when we do get going. I don't have to uh worry about all those other little things.
Bryn Griffiths 2:22
Yeah. And there was a lot of little little different things, that's for sure. Now you've done this before, this coaching thing. I uh let's go back to your playing career. Did you ever imagine in your wildest imagination that you would be coaching and not maybe just sitting on a beach somewhere? Like uh what what made you think to go this way?
Jason Smith 2:40
Well, I think you get to the point when you you're finished playing, you you know, you've kinda obviously wound down as a player and there's still a lot of living left in life and I mean I think the experience I had as a player and the knowledge I took in from from the coaches I had uh over my years playing, uh, you know, I uh saw how much how much fun they had and obviously being involved in the game and it's kind of uh taking on a new challenge. I think you go from being a player to looking for w what's next in life and uh obviously uh still had a passion for the game and uh love the game of hockey and I uh thought it would be great to uh be able to get you know get back to the game. I think I I started in player development uh in Ottawa and um kind of uh did that for a little bit and learned a lot about that side of it and how it had changed from from when I first started.
Jason Smith 3:29
started and then um got an opportunity to get into the coaching side of it and uh have kinda just run with it from there.
Bryn Griffiths 3:35
Hey, when you were playing, did you have certain players that you said, Maybe I'd like to take a little bit of that guy's game and maybe to incorporate it into what I do? And can you d do you still do that with coaches as well? But let's go back to the playing career. Were there players that you went, Wow, I I'd like to add some of that to my game?
