Bob, you're in Vancouver right now. I appreciate you taking the time to fit us in. How was it over there?
It's been better in Vancouver than it was in Edmonton. I just want to mention, you know, Friday night, thanks, Aidan, for taking care of that second hour of the show. Made my way out to Westlock for a mental health event. Christine Vachon did a wonderful job with the Soul Sisters Memorial, putting that all together. And Brett Myers, wow, what a guest. I mean, not a lot of guys are... that brutally honest with their challenges, you know, dealing with battles of drug and alcohol addiction and sort of the lows that he got to from a mental health perspective. I know, you know, you couldn't hear a pin drop, you know, in the auditorium when we were there when he was telling his story. So it was, you know, a great night for a great cause on Friday night.
Caught the 6.30 out of Edmonton on Saturday. Got into Vancouver fairly early. The weather here, has been really good. I am flying back just right after you're off the air today, back into oil country. I'm going to be back in Edmonton around 8.30, 9 o'clock tonight. And there's been lots going on, to say the least.
Yeah, I just kind of want to start off by asking you in general. I mean, in my recent memory, this is the most I've seen the Oilers do this quick into the offseason. What's kind of been the result of that, and what's kind of causing it?
Well, I mean, we're sort of waiting for the other shoe to drop on the coaching situation involving, you know, Mike Babcock. And what we all feel right now is DJ Smith, just because DJ Smith's too good of a coach not to be hired anywhere as an associate or an assistant. So we are waiting for that. But the owners had some business to take care of. And Sam Bowman took care of a lot of that over the course of Friday, Saturday and Sunday. And You know, he made two deals within the final week of the trade deadline. The first deal was getting Connor Murphy for his second. The second deal was, you know, getting Jason Dickinson and Colton Dock, who does need to still be signed. He's a restricted free agent. I don't expect any complications there.
You know, and gave up the number one and the Blackhawks took Maggi Apani back and continued. So from from, you know, it has been a busy time. And I, you know, I think that I'm it is interesting. There's a lot of positives out there in the orders fan base, which is very passionate, very knowledgeable about the about the two player science. So I guess that's where we're going to go next.
Yeah, 100%. I mean, just first off, what's your overall take on the two signings with Jason Dickinson and Connor Murphy, two really big guys? It felt like, honestly, with the AAV that they got, Dickinson getting four and Connor getting 4.1, it seems like the Oilers might have gotten a bit of a discount there. I think they could have easily gotten five in free agency.
Possibly, but the biggest thing was that the Oilers termed, right? Both terms are five years. Those are players in their 30s. Let's start with Dickinson. You know, third-line center knows his role, and one thing about Mike Babcock, when we do eventually get to a press conference, whenever that is, he's going to tell us that he likes guys that can play center.
