Yeah, well, absolutely, Aiden, and thank you for hosting Oilers Now today, and absolutely, it was an interesting day down at the downtown community arena. we got a pretty good indication that it looks like Leon dry saddle, Connor McDavid and, uh, the silly, but Colson are going to continue to spend time together in the same line and same with Nugent Hopkins and Hyman and Isaac Howard. Um, Ryan Shea paired on the D with Evan Bouchard. That was interesting to me, but the biggest takeaway from today was there is definitely, uh, you know, a new sheriff in town, like Mike Babcock and DJ Smith, um, They did some five-on-five stuff early. There was two separate groups. And then they went into a special team stuff.
And, man, oh, man, you can hear them. And the attention to detail in terms of doing the drills right, not cheating on drills, literally, right, they set a standard. And it was intriguing and interesting to watch, to say the least.
All the players who took avails today were asked about feeling a sense of a role today with the first practice with Babcock. And it seemed like they're really taking on to that.
How are the Oilers’ penalty‑kill units expected to be shaped under Babcock and DJ Smith?
Obviously, the Oilers, you know, bringing him in, it was to bring in an idea of, you know, each individual player playing a role in this Edmonton Oilers organization. And I mean, you saw the first practice. How is Babcock done handling that?
Oh, no, it's... I mean, it's probably a little premature at this point to, you know, I guess the biggest thing is just the standard and the expectation level of what we're looking for execution-wise in practice to translate that into games. Like, I think that's kind of what I took out of it is, you know, we're going to practice hard and that's going to transition into playing hard. And so in terms of, you know, clear role delineation, I mean, it's quite apparent that we're going to see Formington kill penalties and Matthew Joseph is going to be a penalty killer. Clark McDavid is going to be a penalty killer. Kasperi Kapanen is going to be a penalty killer. The owners want speed on the PK. They want to transition that speed
on the penalty kill and play a speed game five on five, they've got a pretty good power play. It's been, you know, best power play in the last seven years. Best run on a power play over a seven-year run in NHL history. But they can't be giving up, you know, goals on the PK. So, you know, there's one where there is going to be some clarity. And I think you'll see in the minutes deployment everything that Babcock and DJ Smith have said on our show. It's interesting. Somebody said to me today, boy, it sure looks like, you know, McDavid and Dreisel, they might play together at home and then break them up on the road.
