It is the cult of hockey's David Staples, the lead feature writer. for the Edmonton Journal. Hello, David. How you doing? Is that a strong enough uh introduction for you?
David Staples 1:20
Uh yeah. Okay. Go to build up. I d I don't know, I get along really well with lots of people who are wear two masks.
Bob Stauffer 1:28
So I'll call I've sometimes struggled with guys that wear goalie masks. I've been accused of not being overly uh they say you're more patient with skilled forwards than I a uh than I am with goalies and my response to that is stop the puck and shut the p up. Okay, that's that's my that's how I respond to those goalies. So there you go. David, uh how dare you even suggest about ten days ago that the Edmonton Oilers should sign Alex Formatton? Well, lo and behold, the Edmonton Oiders have signed Alex Formaton. Now you studied and wrote about The uh Extensively, extensively about the Hockey Canada trial. Right, is that fair to say?
David Staples 2:11
Well, I I have you know, I read reports of the uh trial when it happened. But Bob i I I did the basic thing. Like if if you're gonna comment on this case, if you if you want it to be credible and you wanna actually understand what happened in that courtroom You've gotta like there's one document that will really help. It'll take you about an hour, maybe an hour and a half to read to go through. It is very clear, it is very well written, and it's just the judge's decision. She Judge Korocha heard all the evidence. She heard everything. She heard it uh the cross examination. You know, in court people just can't say stuff. They get cross examined. The information is tested. So she heard the the testimony from the complainant and then she heard from the accused all their testimony and the police evidence and the video evidence.
David Staples 3:11
So one person saw all of that and she wrote a ruling. And uh if you wanna have a a a reasonable opinion and I and I think if if most people read that opinion, this wouldn't be a controversial time at all, Bob. It would be very straightforward 'cause she writes in clear language exactly what happened the night in question. What did she say? She spells out a a a situation Which is Um Which is A a group of immature young people. Most of them who had been drinking Least a little bit. Um getting together in a hotel room. to ha to kind of an enact a sexual fantasy. That the

that uh the the the female in the in this case talked about having this fantasy of being a porn star. The players were c caught up in having in having sex and But what she describes isn't a gangbang, as many people say, and it's not a rape, as many people say. It's kind of a it's kind of a sexual fantasy. gone wrong and ending up in kind of a miserable night for all. But it's consensual. Everyone agrees to it at the time. It's completely clear from the evidence that's what happened. And it leaves everyone feeling not very good, I think. And but out of that um comes the this um hockey candidate decision to um to give the uh complainant uh a settlement and when that becomes public
