Well, I hate to be this guy for the folks back at Edmonton that are dealing with a substantial winter storm. We've got the highway shut down, Highway 2, out by Airdrie. So for people that are driving to and from Calgary, please be safe. But it is beautiful here in Boston, much warmer than it was in Pittsburgh the last couple of days. And it is a great city. I am with you.
What similarities and differences are there between Vasily Podkolzin's and Zach Hyman's development paths?
So Zach Hyman, did you think in his first couple of years that he would turn out to be the type of player he's turned out to be?
No, and I got to see him when he was a young man entering the league in Toronto. I saw him every day, and I loved his work ethic and attitude and professionalism right from day one. So as soon as I saw him, I thought to myself, here's a guy that's about to play 15 years in the NHL. But I did not see the level of offense that has come out of him. I'm just not smart enough to see that. And, you know, you started seeing it late in the last couple of years in Toronto. And even then, I think people were like, well, you know, kind of, you know, feeding off Matthews. You know, that was good on the Oilers to go all in on him. And really one of the great mistakes – of the Matthews era for the Leafs, and they've had more than one.
But letting one of their own guys go, Zach Hyman, a hometown boy whose work ethic and relentlessness is exactly what they've missed in the playoffs throughout these years. And that deal fell through. I think we've talked about this before, and people know this story, but that deal really fell through because the board at MLSC was not comfortable with him having a full no-move. I mean, he should be a Toronto Maple Leaf. And that deal fell through, and boy, did Edmonton jump in with two feet. And one of the best July 1st signings of the modern era, really, Zach Hyman to Edmonton.
And full bore. All levels of the organization here on board with that decision. Okay? Full bore. And I'll tell you what it came to fruition for me. And it was funny because, you know, there was a three-game stretch in that 21-year, that weird year where we only played in Canada.
