Coming up today, Eamon Dunphy says he's proud of the Irish players and their handling of the situation around the Israel game at the weekend. But first today, broadcaster and former footballer and TV pundit Eamon Dunphy joined Colin Buick and Will O'Callaghan this morning to talk about the situation surrounding the Ireland game with Israel at the weekend. The Nations League match with Israel and Ireland did go ahead on Sunday night in Debrecen and Heimir Hallgrímsson's side won 3-0.
Dunphy said people should feel pity and respect for the players to be in this situation.

What do you make of everything that happened involving the Republic of Ireland over the weekend?
Well, it's not a simple question. and it's impossible to give you a simple answer. However, you have to feel some pity and at the same time respect for the Irish players. They were thrust into this situation and have been, and it's been very difficult for them to manage it. They've been very brave, I think, and it's... It's been a bad time for Irish football because of the way the FAI mismanaged it. And also for UEFA, there's a big question mark about their attitude, behaviour, and in particular how they have really ignored the Israeli situation and pretended... that Israel are the same as other football teams. And, for example, that while Russia should be put out of competitions and are out of competitions because of their invasion of Ukraine, Israel have been able to conduct a genocide in Gaza and also on the West Bank.

To me, one of the most crazy things about the weekend was Hallgrímsson saying that he hadn't spoken to the goalkeepers despite the fact last week he had said he had information that they all felt uncomfortable about the game. The reality is that he should have known before this camp started where every player stood on this.
He should, and he hasn't really covered himself in glory by talking about the genocide he said he was playing against. He was playing against, not us, and all of that sort of stuff. I just felt he was out of his depth because the manager is a very important figure in this kind of situation. He is the leader of that group, the football group, and I think it's unfortunate
