Hello and welcome along to Thursday's Football Daily. I'm Phil Egan. Coming up today, Heimir Hallengren some names his Ireland squad for the Nations League. It's back-to-back losses for Manchester United who were dumped out of the League Cup by Brighton and Celtic kick off their Europa League campaign tonight at home to Ferencváros. But first, Seamus Coleman and Nathan Collins have been left out of the Ireland squad for the upcoming Nations League games at the end of the month and start of October. Collins misses out with a calf injury, while Coleman hasn't been included because he's still without a club. The same applies to Robbie Brady. Hamer Haugumson has included Liam Kitching for the first time.
The 26-year-old defender is on loan at Sheffield United from Coventry this season and has started their last three games in the Championship. Joe Bagan and Owen Elding will be part of the playing squad for the first time. Cardiff City defender Bagan had been named in the summer squad but he had to pull out due to injury. Hib striker Elding trained with the squad while he was waiting on international clearance. Our reporter Ben Symes spoke to Hamer Halgrimson today about the upcoming games against Kosovo, Israel and Austria and he asked him about the absence of Collins and Coleman.
Easy, Nathan injured, out probably five weeks, so he's staying at the club. Jamie hasn't found a club yet, hasn't started playing, hasn't started training, but even though it's tempting to have him in the squad, we decided together that. it was maybe not the correct timing to do it.
Ben also asked Heimer Hallgrímsson about players who don't want to play the doubleheader against Israel in Hungary and Serbia.
We have players that are uncomfortable playing it but everybody decided if the game is played I'm going to represent my country. We all come from different places with different backgrounds and I think diversity is a strength of Ireland. So we all have different ways of processing these things and obviously some players feel more uncomfortable than others but everyone says that if we are going to play this game we all stick together and we do it together.
And remember, you can listen to the green scene for all the immediate post-Ireland squad announcement reaction now in your OTB Football podcast feed. Troy Parrott will obviously be key for Ireland in the four-game international window, and he's expected to feature Pharrell Bettis in La Liga tonight. The Dubliner was an unused sub in Monday's 2-1 win away to Villarreal, but Bettis hosts Hatafe at six this evening, and they also have a league game away to Deportivo at Coruña on Sunday. And on the football show last night, Michael McCarthy was joined by Spanish football expert Graeme Hunter. And he said Betis are in a really good place at the start of the season.
This is actually a pretty good side, isn't it? Like with a good manager and lots of experienced players. Listen boss,
they're not just good. This is the best start to La Liga in Betis' history. Like ever. They're good enough to qualify for the Champions League in the league which won Champions League UEFA points last is the second best. That's why there are five teams. They've been in Europe every single season while Pellegrini's been in charge. That's never happened in Betis' past either. So yeah, there are patent flaws. And when you get Troy on or off the record, maybe during the international week,
