for listening to these episodes. If you could do that, I'd be most grateful. Now let's transition over to this week's coaching episode.
I'd like to start by asking ya this question. Why is it that so many trades or construction business owners are busy? They're flat out working 10, 12, sometimes 14 hours a day, and yet still feel like they're getting nowhere in the business. They've got no time. They've got no money. They've got constant stress and overwhelm. They're always chasing something, always reacting to something, spinning plates and firefighting. You wake up early, but you're already behind. Your phone's going off constantly. Messages, emails, missed calls, customers chasing you, suppliers chasing you, team members needing questions constantly answering and needing babysitting. You spend your entire day solving problems, and then at the end of it, you're knackered.
You've not missed Made any money that you thought you'd be making throughout that day, and you've got the same problems waiting you the day after. Let me tell you something. That is not a business. That is chaos disguised as productivity. And the worst part, most people think the solution is, I need more work. I need more leads. I need to focus on my marketing to grow my business. No, you don't. Because if your foundations are broken, more work just creates more chaos. And this is where most people go wrong. Me included back in the day when I first set up my business back in 1994. I didn't know about these three things that I had to control. So I just presumed that the busier I got and the more staff that I took on, the more money I'd make and the more successful I'd be.
But that's not how it works. It just organi it's just organized chaos. And what we've got to understand is that there are three things that are controlling everything within our business. And if we do not get topside and control and own these three relationships, then all you're gonna have moving forward is stress and worry and anxiety. You're not gonna grow your business, you're gonna feel like you're a failure. You're gonna wanna throw the towel in. All these emotional Emotions that I felt over years. I know for sure that you'll be feeling the same unless you control the following three things. So write these down, right? These are the three things that underpin every business. And if we don't get topside of them and they control you, I'm telling you now, you'll be a slave and a prisoner in your business forever.
Relationship number one is the relationship. relationship with time. Time is the most valuable currency that we've got, but too many business owners are squandering that time in trading time for money and getting to the end of every week, burnt out, stressed out, and still got a to-do list as long as they're on. So we've got to own time. If time we don't own time, time is gonna control us and therefore we're gonna be working stupid hours. The second relationship that we've got to own is money. Our relationship with money because if we don't, we're gonna end up with cash flow problems, and if we end up with cash flow problems, we end up with sleepless nights, and when we end up with sleepless nights, we get tired and feel burnt out and overwhelmed.
