What happened immediately after Trump's tariff announcement that forced a market scramble?

Don Lemon 0:15
Welcome, welcome, welcome. Oh, so welcome, everybody. Thank you for joining us for Hot Topics. A little bit late because we're following the markets. We want to make sure what's going on. And just before we got ready to go in a couple of minutes ago, there was some breaking news. The Dow, the market was down considerably. And then I believe we're getting new information. And this is breaking news again. Thanks for joining us here. And I'm glad we didn't go on before because it would have happened while we were on. So it appears that Donald Trump has blinked. Donald Trump is considering a 90-day pause in tariffs for all countries except for China. And so when that happened, the market went from negative territory to
Don Lemon 0:54
To positive territory, it hasn't recovered the losses from that we've suffered last week, but now all of a sudden he is considering, I believe Donald Trump is going to blink, and he is considering a 90-day moratorium, so to speak, or pause. I'm just looking at the monitor over here. In tariffs. So that is what we have right now. Okay? So... Look, does that mean your money is back? No. Does that mean the market is up hugely or bigly? No. But it's not in the crazy negative territory that everyone thought was going to happen and was happening earlier and over the weekend because futures were down almost 2,000 points. And this was believed to be going to be the worst day on Wall Street. And I think Donald Trump saw...
Don Lemon 1:48
What was happening and then said, you know what? I got to do something about this. I cannot. I can't let this stand. So he's considering a 90 day pause in tariffs, except for everyone but China. OK, because everyone it is. I just hung up with a friend who is one of the smartest people I know as it relates to these things that, you know, probably something needed to be done with China. But with everyone else, no tariffs are taxed on the consumer. Donald Trump doesn't understand that. And he has always felt this way about tariffs. Tariffs have been his big thing. According to folks, the producers, my producers here and folks I've spoken to that he believes in. even more so than building the wall and all of the other crazy stuff that he talks about.
Don Lemon 2:32
And so now maybe he's blinked, but still not blinked enough because now the market is back down to 100. It had gone up 500 points. And maybe folks said, oh, he's considering pausing But a consideration is not necessarily a confirmation of I'm going to pause. So basically what Donald Trump is doing right now is manipulating the markets and manipulating you and stealing your money. Because at 118 points now that the market is up, the exchange is at, well, 98. Now it's starting to go back down. It still has not brought back all the losses that you made, that you incurred or suffered. So this may be, according to some folks, the off ramp that Donald Trump is looking for. You're right, Andrea. He's playing with us.
Don Lemon 3:25
Maybe it is the off ramp that he's looking for. And if he continues down this off ramp where he's pausing, then I think the market might settle down, but definitely not going to make up. all of the things, all of the losses that were suffered. Because just remember during COVID, when you're messing with all of these tariffs, when you're doing with supply chains, etc., it affects supply chains. And you remember during COVID, the supply chain issue was the biggest issue, besides the folks who are dying, obviously, that affected the economy during COVID.
And
Don Lemon 4:02
And you cannot take supply chains can take months, if not years to correct themselves. It was actually, it takes years to correct themselves. So with him playing with supply chains, et cetera, it's not going to be just a couple of days or a couple of months. It takes years for supply chains to, to sort themselves out. So now we've gone from down a thousand or so points, 2000 points to plus 500. And now back to a negative 10, 260. And what the market hates more than anything is uncertainty. So there's no confirmation, as I am getting the information from the experts, there's no confirmation that there's actually going to be a pause.
