As Vice President Kamala Harris continues her media blitz, Donald Trump is spouting off some of the most deranged, dangerous rhetoric of his entire political career. This weekend, he even suggested that he deploy the military in American streets. to crack down on any protests in response to him winning the White House. That's just the beginning. There's more. Despite all of this, two brand new polls are suggesting that the presidential race is perhaps tighter than it has been in months.
That's not what you wanted to hear, but we're going to talk about it. Maybe there's some good news in it. What the hell is going on? Here to help me with all of this, wrap my head and your heads around all of this, my brilliant panel, a brilliant Bulwark panel, I should say, because they're all both from the Bulwark. Sarah Longwell is here. She's a veteran political strategist, a former national board chair of the Log Cabin Republicans, and a current publisher of the Bulwark. Welcome, Sarah Longwell. Good to see you. Mr. Michael Steele is a former RNC chairman and a former Lieutenant Governor of Maryland, a political analyst for Ms. NBC, MSNBC, and the host of the Michael Steele podcast on The Bulwark. And we had a fascinating conversation just days ago, which I say kind of went kind of viral. It was great to see both of you. So we're in the homestretch. How are you feeling, Sarah Longwell? And Mike, I'm gonna ask Sarah a couple more questions in the beginning than you, because I only have her for a limited amount of time, okay? And you're not gonna talk about, you know, this is Black History Week. This is February for the Harris campaign.
How is the presidential race looking in new October polls showing a tightening race?
All right, Sarah, how are you feeling in this home stretch?
Well, since I'm basically, you know, I've become a Democrat now, I think what I've caught from, you know, working with Democrats is that this is the bedwetting phase, right? This is the part where, you know, Republicans don't do this the way, we don't panic the way that Democrats do. And so the more I spend time with Democrats, the more I kind of, like, It's like contagious. The bed, I had to get rubber sheets for my mattress. And it's all very nerve wracking. And just emails constantly of everybody being like, how you feeling? How you feeling? And I think that there's like, it's like this induces panic amongst each other, right? It's like the way conventional wisdom spread. It's like panic spreads this way.
And look, so I don't feel... awesome because Donald Trump is an existential threat to the United States and our democracy. And so, you know, when you, the stakes are so high, you shouldn't feel good ever. And you don't feel good with things or as close as they are now, just because I don't feel good. And just because I'm scared though, doesn't mean that it's a, you know, a dire situation. You'd still rather be her than him. She is still up in the key States. She's holding her numbers with older white voters and which I think was the demographic I was the most concerned about in the early days when the switcheroo happened. But she's doing great. I mean, she's blowing the doors off with college educated voters.
If I can jump in here, you really do. Because, look, if you listen to I listen to these strategy meetings on two way, you know, I'm talking about all this stuff. They're like, hey, Trump's got the momentum. He's got rather be him than her at this point. By the way, Sarah, you're still you still consider yourself a Republican, right?
