Why are viewers turning off cable news after the election?

Don Lemon Show Producer 0:25
Hello everyone, welcome to Lemon Live at Five. Welcome to the Don Lemon Show. We're so glad that you're here. I wanna talk to you about something that I have been saying for a while. And Americans are finally coming around to it, finally. And I've been saying this a long time, for years really, that you can be informed without being inundated. You can be informed without being inundated. And I think it's gone beyond that recently after the election. I think some people just don't even wanna hear it. I know they don't even want to hear it. Because this is what we have been, the information that we have been getting from the newspaper sites, from the podcast sites, from the streaming sites, and especially from cable and broadcast television.

No more push alerts. No more podcasts. No more news podcasts. No more cable broadcasts. This is one of the headlines. This is from a new Washington Post piece, which outlines how Americans, predominantly liberal Americans, by the way, how they're checking out from the news, not checking out the news, but checking out from the news. MSNBC has averaged, and this is pretty staggering, 550,000 viewers. 550,000 viewers since Election Day. That is a 39 percent decline compared with the network's average in October. OK, that is that is total viewers. A 39 percent drop. Decline compared with the network's average in October. In prime time, MSNBC's audience has declined 53 percent. That's according to Nielsen News.

Data. Remind you, those used to be the demo numbers during the height of cable. Actually, when during the first Trump term election. Campaign and then the administration when I was in primetime, those were demo numbers, not total audience numbers. CN, by the way, which has been struggling in the ratings for months, has also had falling viewership. Again, this is all according to The Washington Post since the election. The cable news network, according to them, has averaged 413,000 viewers since last Wednesday, right after the election. That is a 22% decline from its October averages. And then in prime time, they're pretty close to MSNBC. The decline stands at 43%. and getting lower as a matter of fact why is this happening i think people are they've lost trust i think they in some way the broadcast folks have all credibility and even some of the the podcasters who didn't want to tell the the folks the truth about what was happening with the election what was happening with joe biden and then people know this time around what is happening

OK, so let me just read some of this article that we have here. OK, we'll start with the beginning of the article.

What do Washington Post and Nielsen numbers reveal about MSNBC and CNN declines?

Don Lemon Show Producer 3:31
And so folks are saying, you know, right after the election, they immediately turned off. I'm going to read the beginning here. So there is a young man who said he usually started his day, you know, ended his night, started by watching television all day. And then all of a sudden he said, you know, I would in my evening with watching CNN's Anderson Cooper. And then he says, but no more, no more push alerts, no more new podcasts, no more cable. His name is last name is Wilson. He says, I pretty much stopped on a dime. He consumed a lot of news about the election, but stopped with the MSNBC broadcast the day after Trump's win. It was a Monday morning quarterback and he said he couldn't stand for it. He couldn't stand for everyone saying, well, this is what happened.

This is what Kamala Harris did wrong. So there is part of that. He said that blaming the candidate for some obvious problems with the electorate, like misinformation, disinformation, he said he couldn't deal with it. Here's the plot twist. This all feels different, obviously, from 2016, because as I said, that was the hype. That was the zenith of cable news. Trump shocked everybody, himself included, according to this report, a businessman turned reality TV star with no political experience. And while a lot of baggage had become had become president, the nation plot twist had officially entered unprecedented territory. How would it go?
