Um so this morning we were talking about megafauna. Sharks. Remember Doctor Riley Elliott came on the show to talk uh give us an update on the shark? Um He described them as megafauna. Jerry immediately wrote that down. Megafauna, you're a megafauna.
So m what constitutes megafauna, is that part of your
fact? No, but this is a a fun little side fact, isn't it? Megafauna. There'll be a weight, I believe. Uh and zoology, megafauna, anything over forty-five kilos.

not a megafauna. Unfortunately. I am too megafauna. Yeah, so Megaphonnet. Um Three megafaunas. During the late Pleistocene period, megafaunas started to to develop. So my fact today is megafauna adjacent. And also Pleistocene adjacent. I like it. Okay. Spell that. Topical. Very topical here on the podcast. Um it is why aren't bugs bigger than they are?

Like the giant weta is the biggest bug in the world. Oh yeah. Like Like why don't they grow to a hundred kilos? Well, they don't necessarily need wings. Oh yeah. Because

With it well, 'cause Red Bull. Reach out. But also, um, they they don't fly. So the um the reason is why aren't bugs any bigger than they are? It is to do with oxygen and how they breathe. Right. So they don't have lungs. Yes. They breathe through the skin on their bodies. Right. Yes. So so their ability to um absorb oxygen is heavily limited. Now, back in the Pleistocene era, there was about three hundred times as much um oxygen in the air as there is now, and so bugs were three hundred times the size. Oh right. So Okay. So bugs were about the size of like a rhino back in the day. An ant would have been the size of a even bigger, probably about the size of a blue whale. No, in fact, check that at all. We hold on.
They weren't they weren't that big, but they were huge. And that's why. Is because of their ability to absorb oxygen. If there was more oxygen, they'd be bigger. So be thankful today that there isn't more oxygen in the air.
