Hey, before we get into that, you and I were talking during the break. A lot of times I can tell how much a staff trusts their quarterback by what they allow him to do. So the average depth of target for Bo Nix in week one was four yards. Lowest in the league. Josh Allen, now he's the best in the league, it's 12. But that's telling me that that staff in Denver has, Jalen Waddell, four yard average target? You tell me, you played in this league.
What is the staff telling me about Bo Nix?
I don't think it's as much about Bo Nix. I think they do believe in Bo Nix. I think there's three problems with the Broncos right now. Number one problem, they can't protect the quarterback. Gave up four sacks. When you talk about his average depth of target, sometimes if the staff doesn't trust their offensive line, they will call shorter pass plays to try to help the quarterback get the ball out of his hands so that he's not put in those situations. Make no mistake, Bo Nix did not play well. But they didn't help protect him either against a Chiefs team that looked like they were out to prove a point that they still own the AFC West. And I think they gave him a big wet willy in the trenches. Number two, I think Jalen Waddle, like we talked about, you got to find ways to get him involved early.
He needs at least five touches in the first two possessions. So he feels a part of the game. Like he's one of your prize offseason additions and you don't do that. And then I think number three, they just couldn't run the football. You know, you look at the Chiefs, you were talking about the Chiefs with Kenneth Walker III, the Chicago Bears with how they ran the football. Well, early in the season, what are the problems for teams? Usually offenses start slow because the passing game isn't quite in sync yet. Yeah. And defenses struggle to tackle. So if you run the football, you're forcing the defense to do what they don't do well. And you're allowing the offensive line to do what they want to do, which is move people, lean on them and grunt and force the man to go somewhere he doesn't want to go.
So I think that's a big part of it for the Broncos. You know, they ran the division last season and the Chiefs came out and said not today.
When you see a good team, Rams, Chargers, just flat. And again, we were talking earlier, Robert, about the NFL's never been a bigger business, and that means less patience, and that means more coordinators. We had 21 new offensive coordinators. Chargers have two new coordinators. Rams are always going through. Is some of the week one... like apathy or lethargy of some of these good teams is it's just so many moving parts it did i mean listen you had really good coordinators but he always felt like an oc you'd get four years out of him if a guy hits by year two he's getting calls and owners are like they'll blow out a coach after a year now that never happened so i look at some of these good teams and my take is
You've got two new coordinators. You're not going to hit a home run on both.
Why did Bo Nix have the lowest average depth of target in week one?
I mean, how do you explain the Rams, the Chargers, the Bronx? I mean, these are good teams. Philadelphia didn't play well. Detroit struggled. What do you make of that?
Yeah, it's kind of like that. It's Nunu isn't always good. Think ATL, the movie with TI. Nunu wasn't a great experience for him, right? But it's like having that brand new toy.
