Why is there a stigma around male sex toys and how can it be broken?

Nat Tanchich 0:00
Hey boys, and people who like to have sex with them. Are you curious about toys? Well, if you're not, I'm here to tell you that maybe you should be. Masked sex toys and the people who use them have had a bit of a bad rap, especially compared to the culture around sex toys marketed to women and non-binary people. When it comes to the gals, sex toys have seen a revolution with new designs, brands and technological innovations like those amazing clitoral sucking ones that really belong in a lab. Like, come on, they're incredible. From branding partnerships with famous women like Abby Chatfield and Lily Allen to big depictions on television, toys for chicks are colourful, accessible and much lower in shame than they used to be.

But when we talk about sex toys for penis owners, there's a double standard. When you think of toys for boys, maybe you cringe at the thought of sex dolls or fleshlights and picture the basement boy who uses them. Well, banish the thought. There's an amazing world of toys for boys, and they can not only enhance your pleasure, but your performance too. Nat Tanchich here, and in this episode, I'm bringing you the beginner's guide to male sex toys, because like anyone, penis owners just want to have some guilt-free fun. So if you found out your female friend had a vibrator, you'd probably hardly bat an eyelid. But generally, dudes with particular toys have been thought of as sad, lonely, perverted. Sexologist Cam Fraser says this stereotype comes from the idea that if a guy needs help, quote unquote, with masturbation, it means there must be something wrong with him.
Cam Fraser 1:40
yeah there's this kind of narrative around male sexuality that it's very straightforward and simple and not complicated and that guys can just uh masturbate furiously until they have this five second sticky white crotch sneeze and that's kind of all it is for them and um in order to to get there it's not very hard right they just kind of go through the motions that's this very uh stereotypical way that we think about male sexuality and so

What psychological fears keep men from trying sex toys?

Cam Fraser 2:06
the idea is like, if you need to use a sex toy, even if you want to use a sex toy and enhance your pleasure and explore your body a little bit more and take things to kind of a different level, that there's something kind of wrong with you. Like, why would you want to do that? Why can't you just be like a normal guy and just masturbate like everyone else? So there's this kind of almost like fear around exploring a little bit more with toys if you're a guy, because you're kind of, oh, what if my mates find out? Oh, people are going to think I'm weird. I'm a bit of a creep or a bit of a loser because I can't get a a date or I can't find a real woman, so to speak. So there's a lot of these kind of layered fears and stigmas and taboos around male sex toys that really tend to hinder guys from exploring and using one.
Nat Tanchich 2:49
Totally. They definitely feel like they hit like a kinkier category, whereas like I feel it's so much more common for women to just like now have vibrators and rabbits and the like. I also like had the thought while you were talking about the fact that a lot of male toys are toys designed for men are more anatomical. Do you think that contributes to what sort of puts people off about this whole category of toy?
Cam Fraser 3:14
I think so, yeah. I think there's like a little bit of a... Like, oh, it just reduces this sexual experience down into an orifice or just a particular hole. And I think there is a little bit of... I guess, hesitation to kind of want to perpetuate that as well.

Which beginner‑friendly male toys enhance pleasure and performance?

Cam Fraser 3:30
A lot of guys like, oh, I don't just want to stick my dick in something. Maybe some guys are feeling that, but there's a lot of other toys out there that I think aren't really as well known. There's a lot of like vibrating rings and things like that, that maybe aren't as, let's say, intimidating, I suppose, or have a lot of stigma attached to them. That can be a little bit more of a entry point for guys to start exploring sex toys.
Nat Tanchich 3:55
And Cam says that stigma means you could not only be missing out on a whole lot of pleasure, but also some tools to enhance your performance.
