Why does ghosting feel so painful and how does it start?
It's the worst feeling in the world though when you just text someone that you like and then nothing.
Warning, adult content. The hookup. Love and f ⁇ ing on Triple J. Have you ever been deep in a hot chat with someone? Maybe you've gone on a couple of dates and everything seems to be going great. But then the chat just dies and they stop responding. And you're left feeling cold and alone and wondering. What happened? Hey, it's why they call it ghosting. And it absolutely sucks. I'm Nat Tenchich and we're talking about ghosting because a listener Nick got in touch via email this week. Here's what he had to say.
I'm in a bit of a sticky situation where I'm talking to a girl who I truly feel is the one for me. We'd been talking really well for a while but now she's just avoiding me. I don't believe I've done anything wrong. Please help.
Ah, Nick, we've all been there. It drives me absolutely crazy when people I'm seeing don't message me back. I've had people leave me hanging for more than a month. It's so common. It happens to bloody everyone. Even Florence from Florence and the Machine talked about being ghosted on Triple J last year. And most of her album, Highest Hope, was actually about that feeling.
I figured out maybe this album is basically just all about being ghost. I just think it's such a good word. It's a such a good phrase. It's the worst feeling in the world though. Um when you just text someone that you like and then who nothing and it the scariest thing is is then that person becomes like totally like godlike to you. You're like, Oh my god they must be so amazing. Keep me up and night. To my messages you do not reply You know I still like you the most Best of the best and the worst of the worlds. Well you can't.
So don't feel alone Nick. Even Florence Freakin' Welsh has been ghosted. I spent this week looking for your stories. Ghosters and ghosties. And it feels like everyone has one. Here's what you told me.
I just went on a date with a guy and it seemed to go well. He messaged me first afterwards and said hey had a good time. Would love to catch up again. I was like sure yeah, when works for you. Nothing for like two weeks and he responded again. That happened a few times and then eventually he just stopped responding. Like frustrating because on your end, like I wasn't that invested. I just thought I was being polite by talking to him and I was interested in getting to know him. But you feel like it's unjustified if you were in a conversation and someone all of a sudden just stopped talking to you. You'd be like, but why? You can't ask why because then you seem desperate or out of control.
So you can kinda know like, you know, if they're online and they're just ignoring you. I hooked up with I guessing anybody. at um a festival and it was great because I'd had a crush on him for ages.
What common reasons do people give for ghosting someone they were dating?
Everybody had a crush on him. But I guess the rose coloured goggles were lifted after we both did it. And then we had the awkward situation of we both kind of ghosted each other, I guess. I ghosted him more than he ghosted me, but we had to spend the rest of the festival kind of looking over our backs and trying to avoid any potential awkward run-ins. So I ghosted someone because I thought I was doing the right thing and forcing them into the arms of another person who was interested in them. I only r recently realized that they could have got together if I'd just been upfront with my emotions and that I shouldn't really claim their happiness from my ghosting. I was just being a dick. So I started sleeping with a guy that I gave my number to in the street in Whistler when I lived in Canada.
We started sleeping together for a couple weeks. He was really hot and tall. But I started ghosting him because he started hitting me with, What are you doing tonight? And I'll be like, Nah, sorry, I've got plans. Then he'd be really, really persistent and be like, What are you doing now? Where are you? Like, are you with your friends? I'm like, dude, chill. So even though he was great and sex was really good, I just straight up ghosted him.
