Do I really have a dating type and why does it matter?
You know what, when it comes to actual physical appearance, is there anything wrong with having a type in terms of physical appearance? I don't think so. Maybe when it comes to personality, especially if we end up in relationships that are all ending and we're with the same person, then we need to go a little bit deeper and look at our emotional triggers from when we were younger and look at the way that we have been brought up and why we are going for the same person over and over again and why it is ending over and over again.
Warning, adult content. The Hookup, love and ****ing on Triple J. We all have different tastes. Taste of music, movies, pizza toppings. I'm a big pineapple fan, by the way, for those playing at home. But what about lovers? I'm Nat Tenchich and heaps of people do seem to have a type when it comes to dating. But is it always a good thing? Maybe you should break out of your usual type and meet someone entirely different. In a bit, you'll hear from a sexologist who'll give you some tips for doing just that and get to the bottom of why we have types in the first place. But first, I hit the streets to hear what your types are. and how they're working out for you. Would you say you have a type? Yeah, I do. What's your type?
Just really nerdy, yeah, nerdy, witty, sarcastic, funny guys. I've been dating people that wouldn't be my stereotypical type, but yeah, like I always thought I did. What was the type you thought you had? Tall and athletic normally, dark hair.
The question we're asking is, do you have a type?
Well, no, but they do have blue eyes. So you do have a type? If you put it that way, I guess. Look, I'm pretty open-minded, I think. There's no particular model, I think. I think we just let ourselves down when we have high expectations, so I think a skull with a flow is a better way to go. I don't think I had a type before, but then it's getting to a type, but then maybe it changes. So probably no? Probably no, no, yeah. But I don't know. There's patterns. I've had five relationships and they've all been the same with similar guys, I guess, yeah. So, yeah, I definitely have a type, so maybe I should date outside my type, maybe, I don't know. Do your friends and family, like, comment on it? Yeah, all the time.
All my friends are like... And my sisters, they're always like, oh, you know, it hasn't worked out because you're dating the same sort of guys over and over. Maybe try dating other types and being more open to that. But I don't know, I just find myself gravitating towards those kind of guys. Definitely don't judge a book by a cover. It's more sort of getting to know someone and, like, compatibility with them. Like, once you learn about something, you like it better. So there's no certain type, I guess. But I guess just like if there's a connection there and we get along and like definitely look for someone with like humor and that like get along with my personality. So that's more important than like the physical type now, which is something I've kind of grown to
learn. The Hookup on Triple J. Do you have a type? Sally in Brisbane says, I like furry men. And by that she means guys with a hairy chest. Love it. That's my type. Melanie in Frankston, you've got a pretty specific type.
Yeah. So all the guys that I end up dating, they just all happen to be kind of tanned, short brown hair. They always have a stubble for some reason and usually a few years older than
me. Okay. Do they have like similar personalities as well?
Yeah, this is something that the people around me have sort of brought up and it's definitely not intentional because it's not something you'd go for, but they tend to have problems or baggage.
How did you feel when people like pointed this out to you that it was like you had no idea this was going on and then suddenly you look back at your dating history and go, I think I'm dating the same person.
Yeah, at first I was kind of like, no, I have no idea what you're talking about. But yeah, when I looked back, I was kind of like, yeah, yeah, have a point.
