What are the pros and cons of traveling with a new partner?

Clinton Power 0:00
It can be great. It can be amazing, romantic. It can really bring your relationship together. But on the other hand, it can be a nightmare. You can end up having fights. You break up. It's stressful. Sometimes you're in a foreign country or away from home. And that can just be a terrible situation that you find yourself in.

Warning, content alert. The Hookup, love and ****ing on Triple J. Are you thinking of taking a trip with your partner? Hey, I'm Nat Tanchich, and on the podcast, we're talking relationships and travelling. Holidays can be ten times better shared with someone you love. But travelling with someone new can also bring on all kinds of stress. Soon, you'll hear from Clinton Power. He's a relationship therapist with some advice if you're thinking of going down this road trip. But first, I spoke to Sam from Nowra, who's had a run of bad luck travelling with partners too soon.
Sam 0:58
I've had a few sort of bumps on trying to do trips with partners. I had one partner I think I booked a holiday to Europe with a bit too soon. It was one of those things where we just started dating, I was planning to go to Spain and I I sort of threw it out there as like, I didn't intend for her to take me up on it, but I sort of said, look, I'm going, you can come if you want.

How can a relationship break down before a planned trip?

Sam 1:16
And she said, yes. And I wasn't really expecting that answer, but I sort of had to go with it. So we ended up planning the whole trip and then, About a week and a half out, or actually about a month out, she started getting paranoid that we were going to end up breaking up. We were on a trip. She got really worked up about it. And then a week and a half out, we ended up breaking up before we even went on the holiday.
Nat Tanchich 1:37
Oh, so what happened? Did she end up going or did you find someone else?
Sam 1:41
We ended up, we were really lucky in that we were able to change our flight. There was some awkwardness at the end and we were trying to get refunds on insurance. payments and stuff. But yeah, that sort of got a bit weird. But yeah.
Nat Tanchich 1:57
You said you've had a few other experiences?
Sam 2:00
My first overseas trip, I went to Thailand and I was talking to the housemate of a friend of mine and she said she wanted to go as well. And we were just sort of friends, sort of acquaintances. I needed a travel buddy. So we agreed to go and sort of travel together. And then about two months out of the trip taking place, we ended up hooking up and sort of seeing each other for a bit. Then we broke up and then we still went on the holiday together.
Nat Tanchich 2:26
But that was fine? That wasn't
Sam 2:28
so bad? Yeah, I mean, there was some weird moments. There was one night I remember in particular where we had had a fair bit to drink and we were in a two-bed dorm in Thailand and Like we watched a horror movie in the dorm and she ended up saying in the middle of the night that she was scared and she came into bed. But I was so drunk, the room was spinning. So nothing ended up happening.
Nat Tanchich 2:54
Oh, man. So you nearly fixed it in that moment, the magic of the holiday. But you didn't.
Sam 3:00
I've had too much to drink. Yeah.
Nat Tanchich 3:03
Well, Sam, thank you very much for your call and your story. Have a good one. Cheers. Cheers. Tara, you've gone on a holiday with a partner quite early and it actually paid off for you.
Tara 3:13
Yes, it did, Matt. I was with my partner, Matt, for about five months before we decided to go on a trip to Tasmania. So we took the boat across and we took his parents' car. So I think it was, we were only there for about a week, but we had a really lovely time and It was going really well. And on our last day, we had to travel from Hobart to Launceston.
Clinton Power 3:38
And
Tara 3:38
we decided to take an alternate route. We hadn't taken it on the way down, so we weren't familiar. The higher we got, there was more and more snow on the ground. And at first, it was really romantic. And we got out at one point, took some photos of the snow falling. And it was really beautiful. And then it got to a point where it started getting a bit touch and go because... We couldn't see the signs anymore. The road was completely covered in snow. We could feel the wheels slipping.
