Welcome in. It is Huddle Up with Bucky Brooks. It is Wednesday, February 18th. The hiatus is over. J.P. Shadrick, John Ogier in Jacksonville from the Hyundai Studios. Bucky Brooks joining us from the Big Easy, New Orleans, Louisiana, the HBCU Legacy Bowl coming up this weekend. Bucky, it's good to be back with you. The off-season break is done, and we're back to football, man.
Yeah, back to football. I mean, and this is the best part. The clock resets. The season resets. Everybody has a chance. We're on to 2026, so I'm excited about it.
Well, Bucky, let me ask you this. I always say on this show, you're much more tied in nationally than we are because, look, everybody loves Bucky. So you're always talking to people around the league. And so you talk to more people with other teams, et cetera. Any impressions – of the jaguars season overall from that perspective i mean uh did it raise eyebrows you know uh was there you know 13 and 4 obviously uh joined the elite teams but are people worried about this team is there a respect level all that stuff you know i'm getting at
Yeah, a few different things that stood out when I talked to people. One, everyone is fascinated by how the quarterback finally played at that level under Liam Cohen. So they wanted to understand what took place, why did it click, and why did it click in the middle of the season? Because he played great after the bye week on. So he told the story about let it rip and those things. So they're fascinated by that. They want to understand like how the defense played at such a level in terms of turnovers and making plays. And even though they adopted a bit of a bit, but don't break style, it seemed like they always came up big in the clutch. And then the final thing is, can they do it again? Just because of the history of the franchise and those things.
How can they do it again? Is this a thing that was a one-hit wonder, or are they a team that can sustain their success? So there's a bit of a wait-and-see factor when it comes to the Jags because the Jags haven't been a team that have always been in the conversation of being a playoff contender or a title contender.
Yeah, I don't know why. For me, this feels much, much less like a one-hit wonder thing than either 17 or 22 did. And maybe I'm misremembering how I felt those off-seasons. I think it's because I don't think you can fake the last eight or nine weeks that Trevor did. I don't think you sink back to... interception guy from that i don't know i'm not sure you can maintain the level for eight straight games that he did i mean that's a really high level that not many people reach consistently it's always going to be errors but that didn't feel fluky and uh I guess maybe the difference, in 22, they're coming back every week, right? Yeah. And everything was 10-point rallies, and you felt like you were hanging by a thread.
The last eight weeks of this season, Trevor and the team just felt like they were good. And I'm not sure that you come off that back to 7-10. I mean, I don't know if 13-4 is realistic. That's a hard record to get.
But this didn't feel fluky, bud. Yeah, not fluky at all. I mean, they were blowing teams out, guys.
Yeah.
Yeah, well, I think the thing really kind of dawns on you how good the team was when you look at the playoffs. And you look at all the teams that the Jaguars had beaten in the playoffs. You think about the Broncos. You think about the Niners.
How is the NFL reacting to the Jaguars' success?
You think about how competitive they were in that game against the Seattle Seahawks that ultimately won it. And when you begin to put those things together, you say, hey, man, this team is really, really close. I mean, you talk about the Bills and the Texans and all that. This team is really, really close to being there and winning. If you really squint, you can close your eyes and say, hey, man, we could have been right there in Super Bowl 60 if we found a way to take care of business against the Bills and whoever we played there on.
