Well, here we are. Season ends. It's never easy. It's always abrupt. The Jags go from leading with four minutes to go in the fourth quarter to two days later in Cancun. Bucky, how are you?
I've been better. I'm still kind of reeling from the abrupt ending, as you said, of that loss. It was a game which is weird because when I sat on the bench at the end of the game, you just come to the realization how hard it is to eventually win.
What lessons can be learned from the Jaguars' playoff experience?
win a Lombardi Trophy like at the end of that game. I was just sitting there thinking like man, if we won we would have to play two more of these right to get to the Super Bowl and I just think it's a great lesson for the players and those things because I think you have to get into the tournament to understand ultimately how to win the tournament and the exhaustion that you have mentally and physically only ratchets up as you advance. And this is a game where the Jaguars played well enough to win, but they just didn't win. And sometimes that happens when you play in the playoffs.
Yeah, I mean, you think, like, it's funny, Buck, I thought the exact same thing. You sort of reflect. And all those games you sort of watch as a non-connected person to playoff games, oh, what a great game. Right. And then when you're in it and on the wrong side of it, I'm sure a lot of players felt this, too, of, you know, oh, we're the ones not moving on. Like, this isn't fun. And I'm not making light of it, but I thought the exact same thing that you did. Boy, you know. Yes, you're good. Yes, the foundation is there.
What are the major challenges facing the Jaguars in the offseason?
But getting to that point and being healthy at that point and looking at it and saying, hey, we got a lot of strengths. There's no reason we can't go win this. It's hard to get back. And people know I covered the Colts for 10 years, and they had seasons where it can take two or three or four times getting there before you get over that hump. And the lift and the marathon nature of it, I think there's a lot of people in the building going through that. Not that they didn't know it, but I think what Bucky said was probably the best way of putting it. You can know it logically. and understand how it might feel. But the punch when you feel it, you can't know it until you feel it, right, Buck?
Yeah, and I would say that might have been the difference in this game. So think about the Buffalo Bills. I think the Bills are on the heels of 7th Street. playoff appearances, that's a lot of playoff games to play in. And Sean McDermott is coached in a lot of those playoff games. And as much as we talk about winning the playoff game, really it is how do you avoid losing those games?
Who are the essential free agents the Jaguars need to retain?
What are the things that you need to do to put yourself in the best position to win by avoiding the self-inflicted mistakes? And not that we had a bunch, but we certainly had more than we've had during that run at the end of the regular season. And a lot of times it's understanding how to manage the emotions, the pressure of the moment, all the different circumstances of a playoff environment. It's just completely different. And I know John and JP, you guys are in the stadium. You can feel it, but at field level, Playoff games are drastically different than the regular season, and it takes a while for you, just as an analyst, as a player, as a coach, to get comfortable in that uncomfortable environment.
