So it's just you and me. It's it's it's uh it's just you and me and all that entails. I gotta be honest, but yo, there's gonna be some uh Give some wrinkles to iron out. Uh today I'm walking back from lunch, had a little yogurt on my chin. It's training camp. I would worry about that, Bucky, if it was November. But it's it's August, so I'll work that out.
We'll work this out and uh at some point we'll be good to go. But Bucky, uh I'm looking forward to this. I think uh I think it's gonna be good moving forward and I'm excited about it. Not excited to have JP gone. You know, uh we'll miss him in this format. He's been part of us for what, four or five years. But uh Yeah, so it's it's time for the little bird to fly away.
Yeah, little bird's flying away. I've I've seen on his social posts. He's certainly taken to being a uh a bird member. He's a part of the bird team. Yeah, yeah, yeah. So we're excited about that. Uh we'll eventually get a chance to catch it with him down the road. But it's a great opportunity for him, but an even greater opportunity for us to chat more Jags Ball. Oh, we need more. ceremonies. There wasn't enough ceremony saying goodbye to JP. There wasn't enough pomp and circumstance. So we'll let that go a little more. And Bucky, I think the first thing to do. Uh obviously the joint practice today It was intense. We'll talk about that later. But you and I were in New Orleans. Uh, we haven't talked about the Saints. Yeah. Um, it's preseason week one, so I'm skeptical how much it matters. But uh the Jaguars won 24-20. I thought there were some good things out of that. Uh I guess the obvious theme, they responded to a rough start and were impressive in the second half.
Young players making big plays. Plays. Um, you know, it overall what were your thoughts coming out of Saturday? Uh I thought it was fine considering there was some rough start.
Yeah, rough starts. Um, one of the things coaches always talk about is hey, let's make sure we don't beat ourselves. And a lot of times, John, that entails a turnovers, pre-snap penalties, uh big plays allowed on blown assignments, and then errors in the kicking game. And man, oh man, if the Jaguars didn't check off all the boxes, it seemed like in the first in the first quarter. I mean, right out of the gate, like a big kickoff return, they have a red zone interception. They have a bunch of pre snap penalties, another interception, they give up an explosive play for a touchdown. Yeah. But the thing that I loved about the way the team responded in the second half is man, they got down to business in the second half.
It was a very clean second half, ran the football effectively. They were very persistent. And look, preseason games don't count, but they certainly matter. And even though a lot of the starters weren't participating, there's a vibe that this team has. And you want to see the young players continue on to meet that. standard and I certainly felt like in the second half in particular the effort, the energy, the toughness was up to the Jaguar standard. I thought And again, you and I it's so hard because a lot of this doesn't translate, so you know, you know, the regular season. So you gotta be careful how much you draw from it. But I thought there was a little bit of, I don't know, maybe an identity thread in the third quarter when uh you know, Liam and Grant probably felt like they were treading water a little bit in the first half. Uh Okay, they turn to let's just let's just run.
