What is the purpose of the Jaguars‑Saints joint practice and why is it unique?
Welcome into Jags AM brought to you by Fields Auto Group. We're coming to you live from joint practice with the Jaguars and the Saints. Kine on the speaker, Brian Texas. And we love to go on location. We like to mix things up a little bit. And of course, this is exciting for us to get things going. And finally get to go up against some other players. We're gonna go through our big things today brought to you by GEHA, Government Employees Health Association. And big thing number one is joining forces. As I mentioned, this is the first of three joint practices that the Jaguars are gonna be taking part of this preseason. And this is the first and only one that's on the road. Brian, it's finally nice to see you.
See some other competition and see what this team looks like stacked up against someone else.
Absolutely. We get a chance really to gauge Mm-hmm. Guys know what the practice schedule is at home. Now you're going against someone else, so you get the chance to really gauge who's playing well and who needs to step it up. I can't wait to watch the running game today because Liam has been talking about that, John, since the spring about improving there and we'll get a real opportunity today against the Saints.
Well and we're seeing really how Liam wants to run this thing. He actually w I think he would love to have a lot more. There I there's actually four. There's two against the Bucks in the last week and and uh one against the Panthers next week. He believes and a lot of coaches are increasingly believing this is a better way to prepare than preseason because you can control your environment, you can control the hitting, uh it's a safer way This is the wave of the future.
It's gonna have a big thing number two, which is gonna be opportunities. See the guys running out here now to get ready for practice, but they're gonna be taking this practice very seriously, which means the preseason game won't see as many starters, John. So there's an opportunity for some of these younger guys, some of these rookies in the game action on Saturday to kind of see what they look like as opposed to the starters that we know we will see come regular same.
Yeah, Lee and you almost gotta run over there, Kai. Um
Okay, it's not a bad way to go out.
He likes this because of that and it it's going to give young players an opportunity on Saturday, like you said, to show in the games. And it's very regimented, Ryan, meaning there is a plan to get the starters and get certain guys certain looks out here. And you know, they want these guys to be ready. They want this to be a competition feeling. It's not just a practice. It's a we We want these guys ready for this so they can get this work.
I had a conversation with James Gladstone yesterday, and he decided that the best way to look at this is that today the joint practice against the Saints, against the Panthers next week and the Buccaneers the week after, is about getting ready for the season. Right.
How do the coaches expect the joint practice to impact the Jaguars’ preseason game plans?
That's where the preseason games always were. The preseason games now are about development. It's about developing the game.
Without a doubt, but
but about making sure you know who can play, who you should keep on the roster in the practice squad. So this has actually replaced in terms of evaluation the preseason games.
Yeah, and you can sort of see coming where if this isn't the norm for everybody, it's gonna be if they go to fewer and fewer and and even no preseason games, you gotta do stuff like that.
If they end up going to eighteen regular season games and only two pre season games, everybody will everybody will be doing this every week.
The Saints are doing something similar. They have three joint practices this preseason as well. Let's go to our final big thing today, which is gonna be steering the ship. It's an opportunity for some of these younger players to show out in the preseason games, but also younger coordinators. Grantinski's gonna be calling plays for the Jaguars in this preseason game, and we already know he had some head coaching opportunities.
