Welcome into Jags AM as all of us are getting into the preseason here. As you can see, we're back out on the practice field. You can hear it too as we get ready for another week of training camp. But now we have a preseason game to talk about because the Saints and the Jags played in the Superdome. They also had a joint practice in New Orleans last week that we're gonna recap for you as well. Welcome back into Jags AM. I'm Kainani Stevens. We're in the outdoor version of the Hyundai Studios. Brian Sexton, John Ozier with me. And uh we got to see a little bit of football, if we wanna call preseason football that, but we also got to see some some good action in joint training camp.
It it was fun, right? I mean I told everybody that I talked to yesterday that it it it's pre season football and it's tough to say it was great because people don't like preseason football. But the game from twenty to six at the half to twenty four twenty, it it was fun. It was fun the way that it ended. It was fun the way that Liam Collins running down the sideline trying to get the timeout and then he immediately I mean just put one hand up when he saw, Hey I don't want that after all. So it was fun and football is fun. It's great to be back.
Yeah, and he has the right perspective on preseason, meaning, uh, hey, I try to get the time out, we got the win. Hey, it's fine, whatever, move on. I actually got a question in the ozone, uh I guess it was yesterday. John, I I I ha I just have to believe that the mistakes will get ironed out. Well yeah, the b the Here's why Backups are backups. Because they're not as good as the starters. So it will look better when the starters are back out there. Don't panic over the regular season about what went on on Saturday. And no matter how many times and years we say that, you still get people panicking. I got I got an email during the game. Reality check. No, it's not. It's not.
To play off of that I had someone ask me yesterday, what do you w what did you think? Well what am I supposed to think? I thought it's time to go home. I mean, what do you how do you evaluate the team you know, big picture based on that little picture of backups and guys who are fighting for jobs. I I said, did you have fun? Did you enjoy it? He goes, Yeah, I go, well that's all you should need to know. Also
here's what you look for. You look for flashes of guys who look like oh they're gonna be able to do this. And e every time I say that people go, Well what about the bad stuff? Well the best stuff they're gonna look at Yeah. They're not gonna have on the team. You can't evaluate it. They're looking for things that will work. They're looking for growth. Uh so we'll get to that. Preseason tip. Woo!
Let's go over our big things. We touched on some of them already, but we had to get it off our chest, you know? Uh big things brought to you by GEHA Government Employees Health Association. Big thing number one is a slow start. We talked about it. First play of the game didn't look good. Uh they were able to rebound in the second half. But Brian, when you start a little bit slow, I have to imagine Heath Farwell's gonna be a little upset with how the special teams looked out of the game.
How did the Jaguars’ slow start affect special‑teams performance?

But I listen, it's hard enough during the course of a season to plug a guy in here or there. It disrupts the chemistry, the rhythm of special teams. Now, you know, you're putting groups of guys together based on the fact that some guys are gonna start, some guys are gonna play more snaps. You're mixing and matching more than ever. And it was ugly. I remember a game Jaguars went in two thousand seven to Houston and they sat everybody. That was the end of the regular season. And they gave up two. Kickoff returns for touchdowns in that game because they played all the backups. I wasn't surprised by it. I will say this. The slow start was the theme of last week, 'cause they got off to a slow start on the practice field and had to sort of build to any sort of positive ending that day.
And they had that in New Orleans. The Jaguars are expecting a response, a better response from their team this week.
