Why does Mike emphasize the problem of over‑prepping versus under‑prepping for GMs?

Mike Shea 0:00
Hey friends, it's your pal Mike Shea from Sly Flourish here with another episode of Sly Flourish's Lazy GM Prep. In this weekly show, I go through steps from Rise of the Lazy Game Master and Return of the Lazy Dungeon Master while preparing for my Sunday role-playing game. This show, like all of the work of Sly Flourish, is brought to you by the patrons of Sly Flourish. Patrons get access to all kinds of tips, tricks, tools, adventures, resources, a whole dedicated podcast called Readings and Reflections. And oh, just tons of stuff. I I I love to give lots of things out to patrons. It's a really good deal. We have a two dollar and four dollar tier. We don't have like outrageous, you know, fifty dollar a month tiers.
Mike Shea 0:35
Uh and you get a lot of stuff for it. So if you like the work that I do here, please consider becoming a patron of Sly Flourish. And to the patrons of Sly Flourish, thank you so much. Uh boy. So uh fun fact, I didn't have enough prep last week. Uh you know, when we talk I I think that uh one of the common things I talk about in lazy GMing, in this whole GMing racket that I'm in, is that over prep is way more common than under prep. And it's way more common that you'll hear GMs, in my experience, it's way more common you'll hear GMs who say, uh, that, wow, I had this whole thing planned and they went left and it would totally fall out the window. That's that that story is really common. It's been common forever.
Mike Shea 1:17
And it's one of the reasons why I I do what I do and I have the eight steps of lazy GM prep and all this other stuff. But every so often you get a, you know, I really wish I had more than I did. And that was the case then. That I had. Things happen faster than I expected. So uh they fought a big battle. They won. It was really hard. Uh they ended up the the final blast was Nullah, the death cleric, who used her new rod of of Jabir Al Seki, which she had picked up, which fires off, I think it's a 12 D 12 D eight. It's some outrageous amount of D8s of necrotic damage. And what I didn't consider is that she can use it with her ability that lets her automatically crit on an attack roll. And so she used it and doubled the amount of damage that it did.
Mike Shea 2:02
Now she it takes her two rounds to set it up. She cannot, it takes her an action to mark a target so that she can do that. So it's really not that outrageous, but it basically lets her double the effect of her most powerful ability, and that new rod is her new powerful. ability. It is a one time per day rod that she can use. Uh but it let her do 24 D8 necrotic damage on an ancient green dragon. And the dragon did not have a lot of hit points left. And it 24 D8 was what's what's the average of 24 D8? Uh it's 12 times nine. Uh 108. So it lets her do 108 damage, which you think is like really outrageous. But I bet you our mechanist and our fighter are doing 108 damage uh in two rounds at uh at the same time.
Mike Shea 2:48
So it seems outrageous. And she loved it. And then it's it's good. Uh we were having a chat. Uh I've I've had numerous chats over the past week on the 5v thing about complaints that I've been having with 5e, which everyone loves to hear. And um somebody said, What's your favorite? Favorite spell, and I said um finger of death, and they then told me why finger of death is a terrible spell. But I like finger of death, and one of the reasons I like it, it's like a straight damage spell, right? It's a cool bit, but it also has a lot of flavor to it. I really I think it's a cool thing. And boy, finger death can do it, yeah, it feels like it does a lot of damage, and there was a big argument. So it turns out that if you just did upcast whatever, then it's more powerful.
Mike Shea 3:23
But you know, I know I know my players dig it, and I dig it. Um anyway, this is uh the rod does an equ equivalent of a bigger finger of death, because it was the death rod that he was using to kill them and he was using he was doing power word kills one after the other. So with her special ability, she's actually doing it the same about the same amount of damage that he did.
