Hello, hello, it is Ashley with Budgets Made Easy and the Money Mindset Podcast. I hope you're doing well today and I hope you can't hear my dryer and washer going too much. I am trying to multitask here by working and doing laundry. So I apologize if it's distracting. Today's a quick episode, so it won't be too long. Today, we're going to talk about making budgeting fun. I know, I know you probably think I'm crazy by saying that budgeting can be fun, but we're going to talk about ways to make it fun so that you are excited to do the things you know you need to do and how to make it fun. Because when you are excited about something, you're more likely to follow through and do what you need to do. As a precursor here, too, if you just hate the word budget, like to some of us, it can be a four letter word and you just like you hear it and you just tense up.
Ashley Patrick 1:02
You cringe, you like stress just by the word. Call it something else. It can be your money plan, your cash flow plan, your treat yourself plan, your retirement plan. You just make make something up, whatever like makes you excited to work on it. That's the most important thing. Also, if you are just getting started with a budget, you're not sure where to start, grab the free budget starter kit at budgetsmadeeasy.com slash start, or go to my website, budgetsmadeeasy.com, click on the budgeting category, and there is tons of resources there for you. Lots of ideas and tips and lots of things that I haven't even discussed here on the podcast. So don't forget to go check those things out. So let's dive in.

How are we going to make this fun so that you actually want to do it? The first thing I want you to do is to make it a like a ritual, an event instead of like a task that you have to do. So I want you to like plan it and think about what helps you relax. Is it lighting a candle, getting your favorite drink, playing some relaxing music, sitting down on the couch with your cozy blanket, something playing in the background? create a calm yet energizing environment. Think about it kind of like self-care because when you're taking care of your finances, you are caring for yourself and your future self. It's not punishment. It is something that is going to benefit you. It's not something that like If you change your mindset about it, right, you can make it to where it is a positive thing instead of a negative thing.

All right, number two, use tools that you actually like. So I'm a pen and paper type of girl. I like my printables. I like being able to like physically see the things in front of me. If you are like that too, get a budget planner. I have a budget planner, of course, that I sell, budgetsmadeeasy.com slash planner. Or maybe you were a spreadsheet nerd. Like I love spreadsheets too, but I like my pen and paper. I have a spreadsheet too. So I've got you covered either way, budgetsmadeeasy.com slash spreadsheet, but make sure it's something that you like. Maybe you have a favorite app that you like. I don't have any apps that I like because none of them follow the schedule, my paycheck budget schedule, the way that I teach it.
Ashley Patrick 3:38
And so it just, they never work for me. And then I'll forget, I forget to use my apps all the time. So I'd rather have like pen and paper looking back at me. But, you know, especially if you like journaling or you like notebooks, I mean, a lot of the women in Money Success Club, we all like our journals and our planners and our stickers. So make it fun, doodle in it, put your planning stickers on it, like put it on the calendar, like make a date with yourself. and use the things that you like to use. Get the colorful pens, get the colorful highlighters, like, you know, do whatever you need to do to make it something that you are actually going to enjoy. Number three, gamify your progress. So what that means is make it a game, make it fun.
Ashley Patrick 4:28
If you're doing a challenge, like reward yourself. If you are paying off debt, you know, reward yourself or make it a game as to like how much you pay off.
