Hey, what's going on? My name's Tyson from Previsible.io, and joining me today is Greg Gifford, who is the COO at Search Lab. Search Lab specializes in digital marketing solutions, including SEO and PVC services, helping businesses improve their online presence. Today, Greg and I are gonna be discussing executing successful local SEO through effective link building. So with that, here's my conversation with Greg Gifford, COO at Search Lab. Greg, welcome to the podcast. Hey, thanks for having me. So first time that I've had you on the show, and it's great to just reconnect and dive into local bit, which is something that I've actually spent less of kind of my career in the local space. And I know you're one of the leaders in locals.
Tyson Stockton 1:29
So looking forward to jump into the conversation. Maybe to start things off, like, can you set the stage for the listeners of the differences in link building? on local versus like more traditional SEO campaigns.
Greg Gifford 1:43
Oh yeah, it's a really kind of completely different thing. And most people really think that when you're doing local SEO, you're just doing regular SEO and then you add on Google Business Profile stuff. And that's really not the case. It's a completely separate algorithm. And even though yeah, links worry on both sides or links are important on both sides and content's important on both sides, the algorithm evaluates the the overlapping areas differently. So if you're coming from you've learned link building or just done some reading or some watching of videos or listening to podcasts of link building and then you get into local, you almost have to unlearn what you learn because it doesn't really work the same.
Greg Gifford 2:28
It's a much smaller scale because small business websites typically don't have a lot of Of SEO going on. And, you know, you've got domain authority, which is a BS metric that Moz invented years and years and years ago. And every single link tool out there has some equivalent to domain authority or page authority or trust flow or whatever the various names are. And those tools actually tell you to avoid the links that you really want to be getting in local, because most of the time the links that you want to get in local. Are links from local businesses and local websites, which, like I just said, aren't really doing SEO, which means they don't have a lot of perceived domain authority, which means when you check these really valuable links that are actually the ones you want to get in these link tools, the link tools are like, oh no, those are spammy links.
Greg Gifford 3:15
You don't want to get them because they look low authority. So you got to unlearn that. We don't care if it's a no-follow link, the local algorithm still gives wait to no follow links. And it's really more about personal connections in reality than it is about digital PR and doing all the other stuff. So it's it's a whole different take on link building.
Tyson Stockton 3:36
Fair. And so with that, like you said, we're we're throwing out kind of the authority metrics, regardless of kind of the tool it's coming from. I assume with that too, we're also maybe not as focused on some of the like the semantics or like contextual elements. Like what are some of the like the main
Greg Gifford 3:56
No, that stuff still matters. You know, it it still matters, it's not only local links. You want to get links from industry relevant sites as well. So the relevancy factor is still important. And you know, the the contextual bits around the link that inform Google, hey, it's not just the anchor text, but it's all the text and content around it.
