Because I think sometimes the lessons that stung the most when I was a kid and transitioning to a teenager and eventually to an adult were the ones that I looked back and had to regret.
Because I think sometimes my parents...
if they're going to cash out everything and put it in something stupid, then maybe say, let's have a conversation about that.
But allowing them to have those small losses here and there, I think teaches them a lot more than sheltering them so much from what could happen.
And I think often in some of the first financial mistakes that we see in our business, it's because they're so restrained that when they finally get the control, they don't know what to do with it.
So
If you're with your five-year-old at the store and they want to buy a toy that you know is going to break in 10 minutes, sometimes the hardest thing to do is to let them do that so that they get to see, okay, I bought the cheap toy and it broke.
Now maybe I need to save more and buy a nicer toy or buy something else or not buy anything at all.
So I think encouraging them to learn those lessons along the way.
I'd rather my child...
have a $5 lesson as a child than a $5,000 lesson in their adolescence because of it.
